Just a few weeks have passed since BMW unveiled the 7 Series / i7 Protection, and now yet another armoured vehicle is stepping into the spotlight. The X5 Protection VR6, a familiar presence having been introduced four years ago, is receiving a Life Cycle Impulse update. BMW’s intention is to align the sturdier variant with the recently refreshed standard X5 model.
Drawing parallels with its predecessor, the X5 Protection VR6 remains rooted in the M Performance lineage. However, in synchronisation with the updated non-M X5, it undergoes a transition from the M50i designation to the M60i nomenclature. At the heart of this enhanced armoured vehicle lies the freshly developed S68 engine – a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 powerhouse generating a 530hp and 750Nm of torque.
The X5 M60i’s armoured equivalent is somewhat slower to accelerate to 100km/h than the X5 M60i’s civilian version, which does it in just 4.3 seconds. It can still complete the same sprint in a respectable 5.9 seconds, proving that it is still fairly capable. The ordinary model’s limiter is programmed to interfere at 250km/h, whereas the armoured variant’s top speed is electronically limited to 210km/h. The X5 Protection VR6 still exhibits notable performance traits that guarantee its functionality and agility despite the weight penalty.
Consistent with their approach in the past, BMW aims to maintain a discreet exterior appearance for the armoured version, ensuring it closely resembles the X5 M60i readily available at dealerships. Nevertheless, subtle adjustments have been implemented beneath the surface to account for the augmented weight. This entails chassis refinements carefully executed by the engineers.
The armoured variant is equipped with sport brakes as standard, offering enhanced stopping power. Furthermore, the vehicle features the M Adaptive M suspension, complemented by an M Sport differential, active-roll stabilisation, and rear-wheel steering. An intriguing highlight is the ingenious self-healing fuel tank. This special fuel tank casing is designed to automatically seal itself following a bullet impact, preventing fuel leakage and subsequent loss, thus ensuring the vehicle’s resilience and occupant safety.
The 2024 X5 Protection VR6 incorporates high-strength steel strategically in critical zones, such as the doors, side frame, bulkhead, and roof. Within the cargo area, an armored partition is integrated, bolstering overall protection. Additionally, an aluminum splinter guard is fitted to the underbody, while the option of extra armoring for the roof and underbody is available for an added cost. Standard features include a windshield and front side windows equipped with heating elements, ensuring optimal visibility in challenging conditions.
A bespoke panel of switches is situated ahead of the gear selector, facilitating control over the intercom system, which enables communication with individuals outside the vehicle. A range of supplementary features can be added to the armoured SUV upon request. These options include flashing LEDs integrated into the front grille, a roof antenna with an added receiver for digital two-way radio communication, an acoustic signaling system, and even provisions for attaching flagpoles, ensuring the SUV can be tailored to meet specific requirements.
Produced at the Spartanburg factory in South Carolina, the X5 Protection VR6 is crafted alongside the conventional X5 models. However, a specialised team oversees the modification process during what’s referred to as “craft manufacturing.” In alignment with the standard variant, the armoured model offers the option of an Individual paint finish, allowing for personalised aesthetics.
Expected to start arriving in February 2024, the updated models will incorporate iDrive 8.5 for their infotainment systems. However, post-August production, the standard X5 models will shift to the newer infotainment system equipped with QuickSelect functionality.
