BMW shows off shadowy front-end and provides first look inside 5 Series EV ahead of May 24 debut
The 2024 BMW i5 has been teased in two new official Instagram posts that partially reveal the front-end styling and provide a look inside the cabin ahead of the battery-electric luxury sedan’s unveiling on May 24.
The exterior image doesn’t reveal much but does highlight that the BMW i5 will come with a pair of slim headlights and an enlarged kidney grille that will feature an illuminated surround.
The interior image gives us a much better look at how BMW’s Tesla Model S rival looks inside, demonstrating its wild new ambient lighting that can switch from cool blue to blood red.
We also catch a glimpse of the i5’s widescreen infotainment system that will run the Linux-based BMW Operating System 8.5, although this is expected to be replaced with an all-new Android-based Operating System 9.0 soon into the car’s lifecycle.
Recently snapped winter testing, we already know key details of the BMW i5 that will be closely related to the eighth-generation BMW 5 Series, including that the pure-electric i5 will be offered both as a sedan and wagon.
Following its reveal on May 24, i5 deliveries are expected to begin in Europe in the second quarter of 2024 before launching Down Under in the second half of next year.
Excitingly, the BMW i5, which also has the Mercedes-Benz EQE in its sights, will come with a proper M variant.
Likely to be badged the BMW i5 M, expect a development of the mighty dual-motor powertrain used in the iX M60 and for the zero-emissions M5-esque sedan to come with around 480kW and 1000Nm of torque.
That should easily provide for a 0-100km/h sprint of around 3.0 seconds and a limited top speed of 250km/h.
Sitting on a heavily revised CLAR architecture that’s used on the current 5 Series, the i5 is expected to carry over plenty of parts from the smaller i4.
Stay tuned, as all will be revealed on May 24.
