Ahead of the first deliveries due locally in August 2023, MG Motor Australia has announced pricing for a new entry-level variant of its upcoming MG 4 electric hatchback range. Launching with a smaller 51kWh battery pack, the 2023 MG 4 Excite 51kWh is priced from $38,990 plus on-road costs, which will make it the least expensive EV in Australia when it goes on sale.
MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO Peter Ciao said that he has made the decision to discontinue
the ZS EV Excite (the most affordable EV SUV) to make way for the new MG4 51kWh Excite, however the
ZS EV Essence and Long Range will remain. “Australians are doing it tough amid cost of living pressures, I know they are feeling those rising pressures at supermarkets, when they’re buying fuel, when they’re paying their energy bills.
“There is no doubt that the cost of living is the number one issue right now for Australians and we’re trying our best to help by making EV affordable with the release of MG4 at under $38,990 (AUD) plus on road costs.”
Under the body of the 2023 MG 4 Excite 51kWh is, as the name suggests, a 51kWh battery that can be charged at up to 88kW on a DC charger. Its WLTP range is 350km and it uses a 125kW motor on the rear wheels for a 7.7 second 0-100km/h sprint time. Head up the range to the 64kWh variants and the range increases to 450km, while the performance increases to 150kW. The top-spec 77kWh Essence Long Range increases the range to 530km, while its outputs increase to 180kW.
Standard equipment on the 2023 MG 4 Excite 51kWh ($38,990 plus on-road costs) includes 17-inch alloy wheels with aero covers, dusk-sensing LED exterior lighting, a leather steering wheel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a four-speaker sound system, a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, automatic air-conditioning, heated exterior mirrors, keyless entry and start, four energy recovery modes (including one-pedal driving capability).
Safety kit includes six airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, an intelligent speed limiter, traffic sign recognition, auto high beam, driver attention monitoring and a reversing camera.
The Excite 64kWh ($44,990 +ORC) adds a larger 64kWh battery for more range (450km on the WLTP cycle), lights on the sun visors and a more powerful 150kW motor. It hits 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
The Essence 64kWh ($47,900 +ORC) then adds larger 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler that reduces range to 435km (WLTP), rear privacy glass, two extra speakers, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless phone charger, auto-folding mirrors, a six-way electric driver’s seat, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, an auto-dimming rear mirror, a two-level boot floor, door open warning and lane trace assist.
Finally, the top-spec (for now) Essence Long Range 77kWh ($55,990 +ORC) adds a larger 77kWh battery for 530km of range (WLTP) and a more powerful 180kW motor for a 6.5 second 0-100km/h time.
