When Ford unveiled its refreshed 2023 Super Duty lineup in September, key stats like horsepower and torque figures for its four available engines or maximum towing and payload capacities were missing. They’re here now, though — and for those familiar with the amusingly petty one-upmanship of the heavy-duty pickup truck world, it won’t come as a surprise that Ford’s numbers are the new benchmark (for now, anyway).
Horsepower, Torque Battles Have a New Champ
The 2023 Super Duty will come with a choice of four engines, model and configuration depending: two gas V-8s, and regular and high-output versions of the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V-8. The new 6.8-liter gas V-8 will produce 405 horsepower and 445 pounds-feet of torque, while the 7.3-liter “Godzilla” gas V-8 is upgraded for 2023 and makes 430 hp and 485 pounds-feet, the latter an increase of 10 pounds-feet from 2022. In its regular configuration, the diesel Power Stroke still makes 475 hp and 1,050 pounds-feet, while the new high-output version bumps those numbers to 500 hp and 1,200 pounds-feet.
For comparison, the upcoming 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 max out at 470 hp and 970 pounds-feet of torque from their Duramax diesel, while the high-output Cummins diesel in the 2023 Ram 3500 makes 420 hp and 1,075 pounds-feet. At the moment, Ford can claim bragging rights.
If You Dream It, the Super Duty Can (Probably) Tow or Haul It
Being tops in horsepower and torque is just half the battle, however; Ford also wants to have the highest towing and payload capacities. While the Blue Oval hasn’t released a full towing chart yet, it is boasting about various maximum capabilities.
The king of the Super Duty lineup, the 2023 F-450 is more capable when it comes to towing and hauling than the one-ton F-350, which better compares with the Silverado and Sierra 3500 HDs and Ram 3500. For 2023, the F-450’s maximum towing capacity using a gooseneck trailer increases to 40,000 pounds from 37,000, while its fifth-wheel capacity is now 35,000 pounds. The F-350’s towing capacity is 38,000 pounds with a gooseneck trailer, up from 35,750. (Note that these towing capacities are specifically for regular-cab models with dual rear wheels, the high-output diesel and the Max Tow Package; not every Super Duty can pull those numbers.) The Silverado and Sierra HDs top out at 36,000 pounds of towing capacity, while the Ram 3500 maxes out at 37,090. For conventional hitch towing, meanwhile, the 2023 F-450 tops out at 30,000 pounds (up from 24,200) while the F-350 can pull 28,000 with dual rear wheels and 25,000 in single-rear-wheel configuration, up from 21,200 and 20,000 pounds, respectively.
Payload capacity, like towing, is dependent on configuration. Ford says the most any Super Duty can haul is 8,000 pounds in the F-350 XL regular-cab dually with the gas engine and Max Payload Package, but each truck will have a sticker in the driver-side door jamb with its specific maximum capacities. The Silverado and Sierra HDs max out at 7,290 pounds and the Ram 3500 can carry up to 7,680 pounds.
The three-quarter-ton F-250 can tow up to 23,000 pounds, according to Ford, 200 pounds more than the 2022 and higher than comparable GM offerings (21,900) and the Ram 2500 (20,000).
