Subaru has priced its redesigned WRX range as it opens the order books.
Thus far, the company is only saying the launch is “imminent”, though it’s previously confirmed it’ll arrive in the second quarter of 2022.
The 2022 WRX range will open at $44,990 before on-road costs for the base manual sedan, topping out at $57,990 before on-roads for the tS Sportswagon with a continuously-variable transmission (CVT).
All models feature a new 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Boxer engine with 202kW of power at 5600rpm and 350Nm of torque from 2000 to 5200rpm.
It’s mated to either a six-speed manual transmission in base and RS sedan variants, or a CVT in all other variants.
That means there’s no manual version of the new Sportswagon, which represents a return to a wagon body style for the WRX. It replaces the Levorg, a nameplate it still wears in markets like Japan.
All models feature a new 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system and dual-zone climate control, however only models with the automatic transmission – as with the also redesigned BRZ coupe – get the full suite of EyeSight active safety and driver assist technology.
That includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency steering and traffic sign recognition.
The base manual and RS manual sedans do, however, get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Mid-spec RS models receive additional luxury and convenience features, like Ultrasuede (sedan) or leather (Sportswagon) upholstery, a sunroof, satellite navigation, power front seats, heated front and rear outboard seats and, in the Sportswagon, a power tailgate.
Step up to the flagship automatic tS variants and you’ll find electronically-controlled dampers and a range of drive modes, comprising Comfort, Normal, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.
All models receive 18-inch alloy wheels, though tS models feature a unique design.
The all-wheel drive WRX doesn’t have a surfeit of direct rivals.
The front-wheel drive Hyundai i30 N starts at $45,000 before on-roads in manual hatch and $49,000 before on-roads in manual sedan guise.
The also front-wheel drive Volkswagen Golf GTI rings up at $54,490 before on-roads, while its all-wheel drive R counterpart costs $65,990 before on-roads as a hatch and $68,990 before on-roads as a wagon.
The Ford Focus ST has been delayed to August, while the Renault Megane R.S. recently received a substantial price hike that pushed it over $60,000.
The wild all-wheel drive Toyota GR Corolla will arrive in the fourth quarter of this year, but pricing has yet to be announced.
