Genesis has revealed its new compact SUV, the electric-only 2022 Genesis GV60. Based on the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 – and likely sharing their drivetrains – the GV60 takes a different approach to the SUV form with its coupe-like styling. It’s due in Australia in 2022, and local specs are yet to be announced.
Underpinning the new Genesis GV60 is the company’s new ‘E-GMP’ platform, which debuts on the GV60 and will power future electric Genesis models – this platform is also used for the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. This will be the Genesis’ second fully electric vehicle after the G80 EV and both Genesis EVs are due to arrive in early 2022.
Unfortunately, Genesis is yet to confirm the drivetrain for the GV60, but it should be similar to the Ioniq 5 and EV6. We predict the 2022 Genesis GV60 will get a dual-motor set up with roughly 239kW of power and 605Nm of torque – though the Kia EV6 GT’s 430kW/740Nm drivetrain would be great as well. The Ioniq 5 and EV6 have two different battery pack sizes: either 58kWh or 77.4kWh.
The design is very youthful and portrays the typical coupe-SUV styling seen by other manufacturers with the sloping rear end and thick C-pillars. There is also a fixed rear spoiler to aid downforce and improve range. Roof rails are available as well, while – like the GV70 SUV – a range of colours and interior trims will feature.
Like the Audi E-Tron, the 2022 Genesis GV60 has removed the physical door mirrors to make way for small cameras to project an image onto little screens on each A-pillar in the cabin. Removing the door mirrors creates less drag and improves range. The exterior door handles are also flush with the body.
Sharing aspects of the interior with the Genesis GV70, the Genesis GV60 adopts two large screens to portray information to the driver. Genesis is yet to release full specification but we can see that both screens will be the same size – one is a digital driver’s display and the other is a central infotainment screen. The centre screen is likely to include satellite navigation, digital radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The GV60 name stands for Genesis, Versatility and 60 being the smallest model in the Genesis lineup.
Expect to see the new Genesis GV60 in the brand’s pop up showrooms in 2022 alongside the new electric Genesis G80.
