The Ranger Wolftrak, Stormtrak, and Raptor Special Edition from the 2022 line were all put through their paces. We’ve had our first encounter with a Ford pickup truck in Galicia, and we’ll tell you about the differences and modifications.
The Ford Ranger has become Spain’s best-selling pickup truck in recent years, despite its symbolic designation. Because there isn’t much competition, it’s something symbolic. However, being the most well-known in the area is usually a bonus.
Now, to stay on track in an era when electrification is sweeping the rest of the market, Ford has introduced three new models, the Wolftrak, Stormtrak, and Raptor Special Edition finishes, that provide further personalisation to this offering. We’ve also got the chance to meet them in person.
Wolftrak Ford Ranger 2022
Ford invited us to a really special occasion in the deep Galicia to discover more about their capabilities. A track located in La Base Motor Club, a farm near Carballo and an hour from Santiago de Compostela. We were able to observe firsthand the dynamic and offroad capabilities of these vehicles in a stunning environment in the heart of Galicia.
The Wolftrak was the first version we tried out. An intimidating name for a model aimed at a client who is more professional than enthusiastic, but wants a car that is more striking and has a militaristic style than the series version.
It has a matte black grille, unique 17-inch wheels that are also black, and dramatic sport bars in the cargo area.
Inside, we discover new details in places like the doors, instrument panel, and dashboard, to which we must add an increase in the standard equipment, where we can now locate the system for no additional cost, aside from the purchase of the pack itself. The SYNC 3 multimedia system, the two-zone automatic temperature control system, and the navigation are all available options.
As previously stated, the finishes are restricted to visual and equipment factors, therefore there have been no modifications to the motorization. The Ranger Wolftrak retains the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel engine with 170 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque, which is enough for road overtaking. However, it is not a distinguishing feature of a work instrument that performs flawlessly in locations remote from the road.
It has a towing capability of 3,500 kg and a maximum gross payload of 1,179 kg. Unlike European variants, which have an automatic transmission, an electrically locking rear differential, and off-road tires, it is always fitted with a six-speed manual transmission.
We were able to conduct a series of tests on a dirt track with this model, in which we had to bypass a series of cones at high speeds in order to determine its dynamic capabilities.
Following these two, which were only useful for what was to come, Ford had planned a winding circuit with cones to put what we had just seen into reality. Thus, we had to finish the first two circuits with four-wheel drive and all of the assistance connected, while the next two would require the Ranger Wolftrak to ‘dance’ on the ground. A test that, aside being entertaining, demonstrated the Ranger’s capability to the limit, as well as the control that the all-wheel drive and its support systems have over its behavior.
A Wolftrak pack adds 1,545 euros to the price of the XLT from which it was derived, bringing the total price of this variant to 35,900 euros in our market. Ford verified to us that, at the time of writing this piece, they were running a special for professional buyers that included a 19 percent discount.
Ford Ranger Stormtrak 2022
The Stormtrak is the second version that we’ve seen. A Wildtrack-based version with a stunning Rapid Red hue that serves as a distinguishing feature, however it will also be available in Frozen White and Lightning Blue. A painting in which characteristics such as the tone on the front grille and the edition emblems have been added, allowing us to recognize that we are looking at a different Ranger at first glance.
Aside from the color, there are a few more features that set it apart from its predecessor, starting with the LED headlights, which boost vision during low-light hours. Users that go out late at night would love this. It also has a bigger underbody protection system, a specific cargo area coating with effective load dividers, and a convenient electronic shutter that closes automatically when the vehicle key is turned on.
Inside, we discover a mix of soft and hard plastics, as well as components like flexible leather, technical fabric, and red stitching, all of which contribute to the overall quality of the product.
It also includes a touch screen infotainment system that allows us to listen to the radio or play music from our phones with only a few clicks. A location where we can locate a GPS navigation system that is unrelated to the one that comes standard on the brand’s most recent models.
In this case, Ford has made a slight step ahead from the Wolftrak, and the Ranger Stormtrak features a 2.0 EcoBlue diesel engine with 213 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, which delivers more acceleration and recoveries than the other version, as well as a 10-speed torque converter transmission.
A highly smooth transition between gears, with nearly undetectable shifts between gears.
We confirmed this in the circuit given by Ford, which included woodland regions with significant ascents and descents, stairs around closed curves with muddy ascents, and so on. Everything one may expect to see at a mountain exit. And the Ranger has sailed through all of the tests with flying colors, even among drivers with minimal expertise in these conditions like me.
Two hours of driving in this environment, where current pick-ups, despite their limits, such as their weight or suspension, perform better and better, stands out as well.
A Stormtrak pack costs an additional 2,345 euros, bringing the total cost of this new special model to 46,900 euros. It, like the Wolftrak, now offers a 19 percent discount to professionals and businesses.
Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition 2022
Ford Performance has created a genuinely unique edition that is positioned as the most performance and stunning of the new range. This includes competition-style double stripes on the hood, sides, and rear, all in matt black with red margins, which is one of the colors used to emphasize items like the tow hooks.
The expanded wheel arches, which are also matt black, as well as the bumpers, door handles, and the trademark Raptor grill, complete the aggressive ‘look’ that you crave.
The silver underbody shields and the massive off-road tires, as well as the ‘Raptor’ emblems on the back and sides of the box, complete its frightening image (when seen approaching from the rearview mirror, it imposes).
Even with all of the changes needed to achieve such outstanding performance off the asphalt, the dimensions of the vehicle have changed: it is 6 cm taller, 16 cm wider, 11 cm longer, and has 4.6 cm greater ground clearance. As a result, it becomes a model with no competitors in our market.
While the aesthetics have changed significantly, there have been no mechanical changes compared to the previous model, and we now have a 2.0 EcoBlue engine with 213 CV and an automatic transmission with ten speeds, as well as a selectable all-wheel drive system that allows us to choose between 2H, 4H, or 4L. (rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive or reduction gear with low gears).
Ford had arranged a portion of pure mountain for the Raptor, where the truck performed admirably when confronted with the various “doggies” that the brand had in store for us. Climbs that seem impossible, descents that seem like they belong on a roller coaster… and so on.
I can confidently state that all of the guests who were a part of this caravan successfully completed all of the obstacles, demonstrating the high degree of development of offroad skills that makes even the least experienced feel professional for a few hours. The Ranger Raptor Special Edition, which starts at 59,600 euros and includes a 7.5 percent discount for professionals, has a starting price of 59,600 euros.
