Update: ‘NYPD orders over 100 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT models’ section added and ‘Order book closed for all variants’ section updated.
The Mustang Mach-E has completed a year in the market, and for the first anniversary, Ford rolled out the first model year update. Here’s everything we know about Ford’s revised electric SUV.
Improved Range
The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E’s standard-range (SR) and extended-range (ER) battery packs have usable capacities of 70 kWh and 91 kWh, respectively, up from 68 kWh and 88 kWh, of the original Mustang Mach-E. In the order guide, Ford says that it has “improved usable capacity,” which means that it hasn’t introduced new battery packs. These should have the same gross energy content of 75.7 kWh and 98.8 kWh.
Except for the GT and GT Performance Edition trims, the Mustang Mach-E’s range has improved across the lineup. The base, Select (SR) AWD configuration, has seen the most significant improvement of 27 miles. The California Route 1 ER RWD configuration continues being the range-king, now delivering an increased range (+ 9 miles) of 314 miles. A new California Route 1 ER AWD configuration comes in, which can travel up to 312 miles on a full charge. All range figures discussed are EPA estimates.

Donna Dickson, who took over Ron Heiser’s Mustang Mach-E Chief Engineer position at Ford last year, talked about the range and various other aspects of the EV with YouTube channel Munro Live in August 2021. She suggested that the Mustang Mach-E will see range improvements with every model year update, not just ’22.
We have actions planned. It’s year-over-year improvement. So, we’ll go and get additional range improvements, actions coming in for ’22, we have more coming in for ’23, and more coming in for ’24.
Donna Dickson, Mustang Mach-E Chief Engineer, Ford
The potential changes for improved range could include weight reduction and battery efficiency improvement. The company will get rid of the automatic transmission parking pawl, which would reduce the cost and weight, switch to a single coolant reservoir from currently two, and replace rubber hoses with plastic lines that are thinner and lighter.
We know we have to get some weight out to better those numbers and take other actions, like better battery efficiency numbers.

Equipment changes
Ford has brought several equipment changes to the Mustang Mach-E for 2022. The company has introduced a new Iced Blue Silver Metallic paint option and made the First Edition’s Grabber Blue Metallic and GT’s Cyber Orange Metallic Tri-Coat colors available across the range. It has added heated front seats and steering wheel to the standard features of the California Route 1 trim.

There’s a new Ice White package, available optionally on the Premium trim. Exterior features of this optional package include Star White Metallic Tri-Coat paint 19-inch wheels with Oxford White-painted pockets, Star White-painted wheel lip moldings and ORVM caps, Oxford White front door badging, and Oxford White Pony badges. The interior follows the special theme with Light Space Gray seats, dual center armrest and door armrests, Gloss White dashboard insert, and Unique Oxford White steering wheel Pony badge.
Extended fast-charging
Darren Palmer, the general manager of Ford’s BEV division, said during the InsideEVs Podcast (via InsideEVs) on September 17, 2021, that the company will improve fast charging in the Mustang Mach-E. Like in most EVs, DC fast-charging stops at 80% to prolong the battery pack life. Ford suggests that customers unplug the DC fast-charger at that point (80% SoC) and use a regular charger. Even if the customer still plugs the vehicle into a DC fast-charger, the charging rate reduces to about 12 kW.
Palmer indicated that the fast-charging cap might go up from 80% SoC to 90% SoC in the future. With an OTA software update, the current model is already getting the exact charge. macheforum.com member Cherlin’s 2021 Mustang Mach-E received a ’21P22′ software update, after which it fast-charges beyond 80% SoC, up to 90% SoC. A picture posted on the forum shows the 2021 Mustang Mach-E charging at 45 kW when the charging level is 85%.
We recommend limiting the amount of DC charges, and ending DC charges at 80% state of charge as charging between 80 and 100% can incur high charging costs due to the time to completion. Frequent use of DC charging could result in reducing your battery’s efficiency and lifespan. This is more pronounced on the standard range battery pack versus the extended range battery pack.

Order book closed for all variants
Ford has stopped accepting orders for all Mustang Mach-E variants for the 2022 model in the United States. Ford’s American website states that the current model year is no longer available for retail orders. Key reasons for freezing the order book could be the ongoing semiconductor shortage, high demand, and supply-chain bottlenecks that have crippled automotive manufacturing in the past few months. However, limited inventory may be available at select dealers. Ford says that customers should contact dealers for additional information about model availability.
Sales
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the U.S. market, but it has some way to go before it can catch Tesla. The Mustang Mach-E ranks second in sales in the pure electric SUV segment in the U.S., with the Tesla Model Y taking the top spot.
Ford sold 27,140 units of the Mustang Mach-E in the U.S. in 2021, which was the model’s first full year of sales in the country. Thanks to the strong demand, Ford jumped into the second spot in the country’s EV sales chart. The company says that dealers can sell off their Mustang Mach-Es as soon as they receive them. Besides rolling out the MY2022 update that includes the California Route 1 ER AWD configuration, range increments, and other improvements, if Ford can address supply chain issues in the coming months, 2022 and 2023 should be years of significant growth for the Mustang Mach-E at home.
James Farley Jr., President & CEO of Ford, said during the Q3 2021 earnings conference call that the company forecasts a global demand of 200,000 units per year for the Mustang Mach-E. On December 11, 2021, Farley Jr. said in a Tweet that Ford would increase production of the Mustang Mach-E to meet the “incredible demand.” It is expecting the annual output for North America and Europe to increase to 200,000 units by 2023, three times the 2021 output.
Mustang EV earns a high satisfaction score from buyers
The U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership study fielded a survey in October-November 2021 comprising 8,122 owners of BEVs and PHEVs in collaboration with J.D. Power and PlugShare.
Taking into consideration ten factors; accuracy of stated battery range; availability of public charging stations; battery range; cost of ownership; driving enjoyment; ease of charging at home; interior and exterior styling (new in 2022); safety and technology features (new); service experience (new); and vehicle quality and reliability, the Mustang EV scored 741 points (out of 1,000) to secure the second position in the mass-market BEV segment. The overall satisfaction score for this segment averages 709, with the Kia Niro EV emerging as the winner.
NYPD orders over 100 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT models

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is ready to fight crime in America. New York City Police Department (NYPD) announced at the 2022 New York Auto Show that over 100 units of modified Ford Mustang Mach-E GT will enter its fleet as patrol vehicles in summer 2022. The cops wouldn’t want to run out of range while chasing down criminals, so NYPD is involved in getting multiple charging stations installed at its departments across the city to ensure that the EVs always have ample juice in their batteries.
The police version wears a simple glossy white paint with blue NYPD decals. It has flashing lights on the roof and the grille, while the door panels and the windows are ballistic. Ford has engineered a steel roof for the police department, omitting the panoramic glass roof. The roof also has a scrolling message board for instructions when the vehicle is on patrol duty. Additional reflective strips at the rear make it stand out as a police vehicle in the dark.
