The 2022 Ford Maverick marks the return of the compact pickup truck, while the 2022 GMC Canyon offers an upscale take on a midsize model. Here’s how they compare.

2022 Ford Maverick

2022 Ford Maverick Starting Price: $19,995 | Price yours or View listings near you

Above Average: High-mileage standard hybrid powertrain; available all-wheel drive; tows 4,000 pounds, carries 1,500-pound payload.

Below Average: Hybrid model not available with AWD; some advanced safety features cost extra, even on top trim levels.

Consensus: The 2022 Maverick rides on a unibody platform shared with the Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs. A fuel-efficient hybrid FWD powertrain is standard, but the Maverick has real truck capabilities and is even up for some off-road capability when equipped with AWD and the optional turbo engine. Best of all, its base price checks in below $20,000.

2022 GMC Canyon

2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab starting price: $26,800 | Price Yours or View listings near you

Above Average: Canyon Denali model offers refinement; stout diesel engine tows up to 7,700 pounds; AT4 package has off-road chops.

Below Average: Adding options runs the price up quickly; high liftover into the bed.

Consensus: Now bearing a closer resemblance to its larger Sierra sibling, the GMC Canyon has renamed its trim levels. It features a ride that is more SUV than pickup truck. New for 2022: Optional Qi Wireless charging and Denali Black Edition.

Maverick vs. Canyon: Economy or Luxury

2022 Ford Maverick

The Ford Maverick is all-new for 2022. This new Maverick is no longer a compact car like the days of yore; now it’s a compact pickup truck. The 2022 Maverick features an attractive entry price of $19,995 and includes a standard hybrid powerplant and a decent array of equipment. It rides on a unibody platform for a comfortable ride.

The Maverick’s standard powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) arranged in a front-wheel-drive configuration. Combined, it makes 191 combined horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. The EPA gives Maverick a 42 mpg city rating.

If you want all-wheel drive, choose the required 250 horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 EcoBoost engine. This turbo powertrain is matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This optional drivetrain carries a $1,085 upcharge. All-wheel drive adds another $3,305.

The Maverick interior comes with fabric or available leather seating, depending on trim levels. The turbo version includes two storage bins under the fold-up rear seats. An 8-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard; a Bang & Olufsen 660-watt sound system is an available option.

The Maverick’s Flexbed truck box is large enough for 4×8 sheets of plywood with its adjustable tailgate. A 30-inch lift-in height makes loading easy, and the bed can be equipped with 110-volt power outlets.

An FX4 package is also available with the AWD XLT and Lariat models. It includes all-terrain tires, an off-road suspension, and underbody skid plates.

The Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of safety feature is available as a separate package for every trim level, but to get adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, lane centering, and rear parking sensors, you must buy the top-of-the-line Lariat.

2022 GMC Canyon

With characteristics that can appeal to SUV and pickup fans alike, the GMC Canyon serves double-duty as a work truck during the week and following a run through the car wash, a vehicle that wouldn’t look out of place during a family gathering.

The refreshed GMC Canyon sports a huge, squared-off grille that bears a passing resemblance to the larger GMC trucks and SUVs. The Canyon comes in four trim levels ranging from Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

While the Canyon is available with extended and crew cab models with short or long beds, the off-road-oriented AT4 and luxury Denali trims come exclusively in crew cab configurations.

Excellent handling characteristics provide good driver feedback. Powertrains include a base 2.5-liter inline-4, 3.6-liter V6, or a muscular 2.8-liter turbodiesel inline-4 cylinder. The latter allows for towing up to 7,700 pounds. In addition to standard rear-wheel drive, a 4-wheel drive system is available. The V6 gas is paired with an 8-speed automatic, while the 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Available all-wheel drive/4-wheel drive; choice of drivetrains.
