If you recently watched 2019’s Ford v Ferrari movie, you’ll be familiar with the incredible 1966 Le Mans race where Ford took home the top three positions in its now-iconic Ford GT40 MKII racer. The third-place finisher in that 1-2-3 winning lineup of GTs is now getting a very limited special edition run of the 2022 Ford GT supercar, to commemorate Ford’s racing partnership with Holman Moody that helped the automaker win that iconic race.
Most people are aware of Ford’s Shelby partnership for the GT program back in the 1960s, but the automaker also tapped race car manufacturer Holman Moody to help it take down Ferrari with the number 5 car, raced by Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson. The actual race car its based on was auctioned in 2018 for just under $10 million, and with demand like that, it’s clear why Ford decided to push ahead with a modern inspiration for its latest heritage series GT.
The limited run of 2022 GTs will get the striking paintwork of the third-place finisher, with red accent over gold, and a modernized number “5” in Oxford White roundels on the doors, wing, and in the front, which matches the race car. It’ll sit on very modern 20-inch carbon fiber wheels with black Brembo brakes tucked away behind them.
Inside, there are more number 5s dotted around, gold trim on the dashboard and instrument cluster, golden paddle shifters, with modern carbon fiber trim accents, and images show a retro-inspired dotted seat pattern in the fabric. The Holman Moody Heritage Edition GT is only available to pre-approved GT customers with deliveries expected to begin this spring. Both the original race car, and the new special edition, will be on display at next week’s New York International Auto Show.
