F-150 vs. Ranger: How Much Truck Do You Need?
Ford F-150
Long recognized as the best-selling vehicle in America, the 2022 Ford F-150 shows no sign of giving up that title anytime soon. With numerous configurations, cabs, engines, beds, and abilities, it should be enough truck for anyone. But we like having choices and the F-150 gives us plenty of them.
The F-150 engines include a base 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6 and a 325-hp 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6. There’s also a 400-hp 5.0-liter V8 and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 making 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Those needing more can select a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 hybrid delivering 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of stump-pulling torque. Also coming is the electric F-150 Lightning.
The base Ford F-150 XL ($29,640) is a no-frills choice with a regular cab, short box, base V6, and rear-wheel drive. Most buyers will be happier in the better-equipped XLT or more upscale F-150 Lariat. Luxury trims include the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited models, which can reach $80,000.
SuperCab models offer a tight second row, but the SuperCrew provides a roomy, family-friendly cabin. A destination fee of $1,695 applies across the board for all F-150 models. Grilles and other features vary according to your selected trim choice.
Ford’s Co-Pilot360 safety tech suite and SYNC 4 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard throughout. A standout feature: a backup camera with dynamic hitch assist. The available BlueCruise driving system allows for hands-free highway driving on roads that Ford has mapped. Other available features include a 12-inch infotainment display and Bang & Olufsen premium audio system. We especially like the storage bin cover that folds out into a work desk for those times you need to use a laptop at a worksite.
Ford Ranger
The Ford Ranger carries on for 2022 in the midsize truck segment as a highly capable and adaptable midsize truck that makes everyone forget the previous Ranger. It’s powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder engine making 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission, it moves with authority regardless of whether it is equipped with rear or 4-wheel drive. By the way, 4-wheel drive will set you back approximately $4,000, which seems a bit steep. The destination fee is $1,195.
The 2022 Ranger offers a choice of SuperCab or larger SuperCrew options with a pair of bed lengths. If you haul passengers regularly, we recommend the SuperCrew over the rather tight-fitting SuperCab. If you tow, we recommend the Tow-Optimized Blind Spot Monitoring System, which extends its vision to include whatever is being towed behind the truck. Music lovers, meanwhile, will appreciate the available Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker Audio System. Together, they are two of our favorite options.
Ford’s Co-Pilot360 safety suite is available on all models, but you will pay for it on the XL. It is standard on the XLT and Lariat trim levels. For 2022, the Ranger gets a new Splash edition, available with exclusive orange and black side graphics and black 18-inch wheels. Inside there is orange accent stitching, steering wheel, shifter knob, and parking brake boot. It’s a throwback to the 1990s where the Splash edition Ranger last appeared.
