BMW has locked in pricing for its sporty 2 Series coupe, adding a mid-grade variant to boost its appeal.
The range now includes a new four-cylinder 230i variant to sit between the existing 220i base model and hot M240i six-cylinder all-wheel drive top-spec.
The 230i wears an MSRP of $70,900 and sits closer to the $61,900 220i than the $89,900 M240i. It persists with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine rather than the six-cylinder in the top-spec car, but with a revised tune for a much higher output and faster 0-100km/h sprint time.
Rather than the 220i’s 135kW/300Nm and 0-100km/h sprint of 7.5 seconds, the 230i puts out 190kW/400Nm for a 0-100km/h time of just 5.8 seconds. Meanwhile the M240i puts down 285kW/500Nm for a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.3 seconds.
Standard features on the base 220i for 2022 include an M Sport styling pack (optional overseas) including a steering wheel, sport seats, Alcantara upholstery, and a dark interior headliner, an M Sport suspension package, 18-inch alloy wheels, parking assistant, 12.3-inch digital dash with a 10.25-inch multimedia screen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, interior ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, push-start ignition, as well as LED head lights and tail lights.
The new 230i grade includes all the base equipment, ups the power and torque, and adds an M Sport brake package, electric front seat adjust, adaptive LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, and a mid-tier audio system.
Splashing for the M240i adds the xDrive all-wheel drive system, a rear spoiler, adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, electric sunroof, full leather upholstery, head-up display, heated front seats with lumbar support, illuminated M highlight trims, and a premium Harmon Kardon branded sound system.
The sunroof and 19-inch wheels from the M240i can be optioned on lower grades as part of the ‘Enhancement Package for $3900, while keyless entry, electric heated front seats with lumbar support, and a heated steering wheel can be added as part of the comfort package on the 220i and 230i for $3400 or $1400 respectively.
M Sport enhancements, which includes the sport brake package, exterior LED lighting, M-branded seat belts, a rear spoiler and highlight pack costs $2500 on the 220i, $1500 on the 230i and $1200 on the M240i as part of the ‘M Sport Plus Package’.
Finally, the ‘Executive Package’ includes remote engine start, tyre pressure monitoring, an enhanced alarm system, sun protective glazing, Harmon Kardon premium audio, and a ‘drive recorder’ can be added to the 220i for $3000 (bar the drive recorder), the 230i for $3300 and the M240i for $2800.
The rear- or all-wheel drive BMW 2 Series coupe offers an intriguing alternative to the front- or all-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz CLA or Audi A3/S3 in the premium segment and is confusingly joined by a front- or all-wheel drive 2 Series Gran Coupe four-door sedan which is on the same platform as the 1 Series hatch as part of BMW’s expansive range.
