This is one of the closest supercar drag races we've ever seen.
The McLaren 765LT has proven to be a formidable force on the drag strip. Remarkably, the 765LT can set even faster quarter-mile times than the previous record holder, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, even on stock tires. But what happens when the McLaren 765LT goes head-to-head with the Ferrari SF90 Stradale on the drag strip?
YouTube channel Dragtimes pitted the two stupidly powerful supercars head-to-head earlier this year, and the SF90 annihilated the 765LT thanks to its superior traction. But now it's time for the McLaren 765LT to redeem itself. Dragtimes brought the 765LT and SF90 back for another duel on the drag strip, but this time the 765LT was fitted with grippier Toyo R888R tires. The result is one of the closest supercar drag races we've ever seen.
First, let’s see how these two titans compare. Powering the McLaren 765LT is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 755 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The SF90, on the other hand, has a 4.0-liter V8 engine rated at 769 horsepower. This would make the two cars evenly matched in the power department, but the SF90 gets an additional power boost from three electric motors.
Combined, this setup produces a mind-melting 986 hp and 590 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. As well as having more power, the SF90 also has all-wheel drive, giving it better traction than the 765LT. However, the electric motors make the SF90 significantly heavier than the 765LT.
In the first race, the result was so close that the two drivers argued who won. However, the time slips confirm that the Ferrari SF90 Stradale crossed the quarter-mile in 9.521 seconds at 147.18 mph, whereas the 765LT did it in 9.522 seconds. Yes, you read that right: the SF90 Stradale was faster than 765LT by one-thousandth of a second. However, technically the 765LT still won because it crossed the line first. In the second race, the SF90 pulls ahead, maintains the lead, and beats the 765LT, but the third race is almost as close as the first.
While the SF90’s quarter-mile times were marginally faster every time, the 765LT won two out of three drag races thanks to the driver’s faster reaction times.
