After an Eight year stint, Nissan India has decided to cease production of cars from its budget brand, Datsun
Japanese manufacturer Nissan has decided to stop the production of Datsun in India. This means that the Datsun vehicles like the Go, Go+ and Redi-Go will not be available in the Indian market anymore. This does not come as a surprise as the global manufacturer began to shut down the operation of the low-cost car maker around the world in 2019.

The Indian car market is not an easy place to survive. After manufacturers like General Motors and Ford left the country for dwindling sales, Datsun was not posting great results on the sales charts.
Datsun started its operations in India way back in 2014 with the Go hatchback. Two new models were spawned on the same platform – Go+ and Redi-Go. While all three models did get decent sales figures, being low-cost models, they were not bringing in the big numbers like the competition.

Several things went against Datsun in India. While many cars scored a zero in Global-NCAP test ratings, Datsun was a new manufacturer in India and it was worst affected by the crash ratings. The “cheap” price tag on the Datsun cars also drove away many customers.
While India is a price-sensitive market, the customers really do not want barebone products without a long list of features. Datsun was selling exactly the same car models in India. This is why the majority of the customers rejected the brand.
But the news does not comes as a surprise
Nissan India’s relationship with Hover Automotive India, which was the exclusive distributor in marketing, sales and after-sales for Datsun cars in India came to an end. The Japanese automaker was forced to terminate the agreement.

Interestingly, Nissan Magnite, which is the brand’s comeback product in India was originally developed as a Datsun product.
What will happen to the current Datsun owners in India?
Datsun will continue to support the current Datsun customers in India with spare parts, and after-sales service and will also honour the warranties. Nissan India said in a statement that they will continue to support the customers. But they did not mention a timeline.
Datsun was only selling the Redi-Go in the Indian market and in the month of March, a total of 239 units were sold across the country.
