Datsun, who re-entered South Africa in 2014 with the Go hatcback, is once again being discontinued.
This forms part of parent-brand Nissan’s wider transformation strategy that it announced in 2020, which saw Datsun being withdrawn from Russia and Indonesia, with South Africa and India slated to be next in line.
With the shutting down in April 2022 of the last Datsun production plant in India, the plant where South Africa got its models from, the local subsidiary is expected to wind down operations in the coming months.
TopAuto contacted Nissan South Africa for comment, but the automaker did not explicitly confirm that Datsun is discontinued in the country.
“As part of Nissan’s global transformation strategy, Nissan is focusing on core models and segments that bring the most benefit to customers, dealer partners, and the business,” said Nissan South Africa.
“We can reassure all existing and future Datsun owners that customer satisfaction remains our priority, and we will continue to provide the highest levels of aftersales service, parts availability, and warranty support from our national dealership network.”
However, a recent report by Engineering News said Nissan South Africa has already confirmed it “no longer sells Datsun models locally.”
As with the other markets, we expect Datsun South Africa will still sell the final remaining stock standing on showroom floors before closing its doors for good.
What you can buy right now
For interested buyers, the Datsun Go is currently still listed on Datsun South Africa’s website at a starting price of R184,600.
The hatch is offered in three trim levels – Mid, Five, and Lux – only the Lux being available with an automatic transmission.
Additionally, it can be bought in an MPV body style with up to seven seats, although this model can only be had in Mid and Lux trims.
Regardless of body style, the entire Go line-up is driven by a 1.2-litre, petrol engine putting out 50kW and 104Nm, driving the front wheels.
Depending on the trim, the range also offers features such as a 7-inch Bluetooth infotainment system, reverse parking sensors, alloy wheels, and LED daytime running lights.
