The new safety feature is arriving this summer.
Ford has announced that the Mustang will get a new safety feature called Exit Warning – a piece of tech patented earlier this year and discovered by CarBuzz. As the name suggests, Exit Warning alerts exiting drivers whenever a vulnerable road user – a cyclist, a scooter user, or even a pedestrian – approaches from behind.
The Exit Warning function works when the Mustang is parked, and it uses rear radar to detect oncoming road users. According to the Blue Oval company, the system can identify road users traveling at least four miles per hour, one-third the speed of an average cyclist.
If the Exit Warning function detects an approaching road user, the system will provide an audible alert and a visual warning on the instrument cluster and side mirror. It will remain active for three minutes after the ignition is switched off.
The automaker didn't disclose whether the Exit Warning system will be available in other Ford vehicles.
The Exit Warning function is less significant than the SAE Level 3 safety package, like what Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce later this year in the US. Still, updates like this make the pony car more enticing. After all, the Mustang has been the best-selling sports car for the last 10 years.

The system can also help the Mustang's reputation, especially when it comes to accidents with other road users and pedestrians. We'd be remiss, however, not to point out that the 'Stang isn't the most accident-prone vehicle in the US. That distinction goes to the Audi S4, followed by Scion iA and Chevrolet Volt.
Ford CEO Jim Farley admitted that a more comprehensive SAE Level 4 system is still far from the brand's reality. But as simple as an Exit Warning function can already reflect the company's commitment to continue innovating car safety.
The Exit Warning system is arriving in the S650-generation Ford Mustang this summer. It will complement the car's Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology that comes with pre-collision assist, automatic emergency braking (AEB), a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors, among others.
