The very first 2024 Ford Mustang built will cross the auction block at a Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale, Arizona at the end of January 2023, with the entirety of the proceeds going to benefit a diabetes charity. To clarify, the car itself – VIN 001 – won’t be crossing the block, since it hasn’t been built yet, so the buyer will, for now, technically be bidding on what will be the first Mustang built of the new generation.
That car will be a GT with a 5.0-litre V8, though other specs are yet unknown and it’s not been made clear if the new owner will get to specify exactly what they want on it before it’s assembled.
What is known is that the profits of the sale, to take place on January 28, will go entirely to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. A pre-sale estimate has not been released, but charity auctions of this sort do tend to drive sales figures up as bidders find themselves in a suddenly generous mood.
Barrett-Jackson seems to have become the go-to auction house for automakers who want to unload their VIN 001 jobs via charity auction; the firm has pulled off several such sales, including one last year, for the first 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, which set a B-J charity auction record when it hammered for US$3.6 million. The year prior, it was the first new Hummer EV and Ram TRX; and in 2020, it was the first C8-generation Corvette. The first 2015 Ford Mustang was also sold in the same fashion in January 2014, when it netted US$300,000.
