The BMW M5 could be credited with launching the high-powered premium midsize car segment. Going as far back as the mid-1980s, the E28 BMW M5 was among the first luxury cars to get a powerful engine and a number of go-fast bits for, as they say, the ultimate driving experience.
The seventh iteration of the M5 will be, as always, based on the regular 5 Series car, in this case, the new G60, which is expected in 2023. The M5 should land the following year, and based on these spy images shot at Germany’s Nurburgring, it will be as subtle as ever, and monstrously fast.
From these pictures, we can see the new slim and sharp headlights. The front bumper is also quite clear. The lower trapezoidal opening looks to be designed to suck in massive quantities of air for cooling and presumably aerodynamic purposes. The best part is, like the new M2, BMW has opted to leave out the still-controversial oversized kidneys found on the current M3 and M4.

In true German fashion, the M5’s sides are unadorned save for generously-flared fenders and what look to be strong rocker panels. The rear, too, sports nothing that could be considered over-the-top. A tasteful well-integrated spoiler is fitted on the trunk lid, and four beefy tailpipes are clearly visible.
Also visible is an “electrified vehicle” sticker that confirms that this new G60-generation BMW M5 will be a hybrid. In fact, rumour has it that it will harbour plug-in hybrid technology and offer some EV range. But, and let’s not kid ourselves, the goal is power over efficiency. Some say the powertrain will involve a V8 engine and two electric motors that combined will produce in the vicinity of 750 hp and 740 lb-ft of torque. With AWD capability, this will undoubtedly be the fastest M5 of all time.
We do not have any images of the BMW M5’s interior in this batch, however it is assumed that it will feature BMW’s massive Curved Display (which seamlessly integrates the digital instrument cluster and central display), BMW iDrive 8.0, and far more.
