The ongoing Monterey Car Week provided a platform for Acura to present its plans for an electric future in the form of the Precision EV concept. Based on GM’s Ultium battery architecture, the SUV-styled vehicle is an evolution of the 2016 Precision concept sedan.
Similar in size to the current Acura RDX, the Precision EV also takes the form of a crossover. One of the core ideas behind the concept is to reinterpret Acura’s current design language rather than embark on a complete makeover. As a result, the Precision EV concept exudes a familiar feel. There’s that pentagon-shaped front fascia that now includes an elaborate light show since there is no longer need for a traditional radiator grille. The peaked hood also references the existing design for the Acura TLX and RDX models.
The Precision EV squats firmly on 23-inch wheels wrapped around a swirling five-spoke design. The wheels feature pixelated inserts that mirror the pattern of the ‘scattered’ fog lights up front, a design theme dubbed ‘particle glitch’ by Acura. Acura’s designers were inspired by the images of luxury speedboats cutting through water, and this is evident in the concept’s numerous creases and sharp contour lines. That marine influence continues with the three-tone colour scheme. The bottom of the car is finished with silver paint mimicking the part of the boat that sits underwater. It contrasts with the Aquatic Blue matte-finish for the ‘mid-section,’ while a blacked-out top completes the look.

Acura’s illustrations of the cockpit highlight a sophisticated, high-tech interior space, complete with a Formula One-inspired yoke-style steering and bow-shaped instrument panel accents. There are two available driving experiences. In ‘Instinctive Mode,’ the driver is in control with the cabin bathed in red lighting, accompanied by a playback of engine sounds mimicking performance driving. The second driving mode cheekily termed ‘Spiritual Lounge Mode,’ retracts the steering wheel and activates the car’s autonomous driving capabilities. A cool blue hue replaces the red lighting, and the driver can relax with a soothing underwater display on the infotainment system.
The Acura Precision EV is not an actual preview of a future production model. However, it does give some valuable insight into styling cues and tech wizardry that can be expected when the brand’s first EV offering is launched sometime in 2024.
