Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), official distributor of Mitsubishi Motors vehicles in Malaysia, recently donated high-powered solar systems to give the Orang Asli’s shared community space commonly known as ‘Rumah Adat’ access to solar energy.
The donation was done through Global Peace Foundation, a non-profit organization (NGO) with a mission to build resilient and cohesive Orang Asli communities.
When it’s dark, bonfires are often started by burning dried palm fruits that generate a lot of smoke, resulting in coughs and watery eyes among villagers, especially children. As such the lack of access to electricity in Orang Asli communities can cause health risks and negative environmental impact.
With materials such as bamboo used to build these houses and community spaces, the risk of fire is even higher. Some Orang Asli families also rely on disposable energy such as petrol to run generators and batteries to power more than just lights.
“We want to see Malaysians even the indigenous community live a better life. With high-power solar systems, we will be providing the Orang Asli community access to affordable and renewable energy that enhances productivity- allowing community projects to continue even after dark, minimizing health and environmental impact from non-renewable energy, lesser environmental pollution, and lastly reducing energy expenditure from buying expensive energy sources that are not sustainable,” said Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, Senior Vice President, Arba Rahman.
