BMW is a step closer to performance electrification with its XM, and it’s now doing final testing on prototypes of this newest M, which happens to be a plug-in hybrid.
It’s the first gas-electric hybrid from the brand’s performance division, mating a new 4.4L twin-turbo V8 to an electric motor, giving the system a total of 650 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque.
The XM will also include BMW’s first hybrid-specific xDrive all-wheel-drive system with electronic rear differential lock, and an M suspension specifically tuned to this model. In European testing, the XM achieves an electric-only range of about 80 kilometres when charged.

The automaker said the XM is currently completing the final phase of development, in preparation for its start of production in December 2022 at the company’s factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It’ll mark a milestone for the vehicle to head down the assembly line before the calendar clicks over, because 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of BMW M.
BMW states the vehicle will have an “almost perfect” 50-50 weight distribution, and will come standard with an Adaptive M Professional suspension, including electronically-controlled shock absorbers and, in a first for the automaker, an electromechanical roll-stabilizing system.
This will reduce body roll on uneven road surfaces and actively adjust body height. Its Integral Active Steering, also standard, increases stability when changing lanes. Among the vehicle’s options will be light-alloy wheels up to 23 inches.
“With the debut of the BMW XM at the end of our anniversary year, we are looking into the future where BMW M will continue to break with conventions and push boundaries,” said Franciscus van Meel, board chairman at BMW M.
“Regardless of their drive technology, our performance and high-performance cars will continue to possess an unmistakable M feeling in a fascinating way and transfer it to the road.”
