Many dismiss the creations from the French Lion as competent competitors on the track but Peugeot actually have a strong winning lineage in motorsport and seek to continue that legacy with their new hyper creation. The wingless Peugeot 9X8 Hybrid Hypercar is set to represent the country on home soil at the 24 Hour of Le Mans and in 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with a contrasting photoshoot kicking the year off for the challenger.

Seductive yet brutalist photographs from renowned professional Agnieszka Doroszewicz are the latest documentation of the Hypercar. The metaphor of the shoot was to portray the fleeting light changes as the hours go by at the Circuit de la Sarthe through the contrast of the illuminated and harsh concrete in the background while the beautifully crafted Wingless Peugeot 9X8 Hybrid Hypercar is placed fore. It portrays the endurance challenger as an iconic object demonstrated as ultimate design, far more than just a car. Peugeots 3 LED DRL design which is now prevalent on road cars and also the 9X8 are further mimicked by the use of light tubes throughout the photoshoot.

Speaking of design, the most striking aspect that the sleek silhouette of the French marque beholds is the visible absence of rear downforce as we know it. Matthias Hossann, Peugeot Style Director states this shows the audacity and inventiveness of the Peugeot designers and engineers. That’s right, it is a wingless Le Mans competitor despite that no car has won without one over the past 50 years when the legendary Porsche 917 took the top step of the podium.

A few years later in 1992 and 1993 Peugeot claimed the Le Mans title with the V10 petrol powered 905 while the odd but satisfying sounding V12 HDi-FAP diesel 908 last won for the automaker in 2009. Once again, Peugeot is dabbling with technology that marks the beginning of the new era as Olivier Jansonnie, Technical Director for the project adds “With the 9X8, Peugeot is starting a new chapter in hybrid sports cars. Performance is becoming more electric and more virtuous, without sacrificing anything in terms of competitiveness.”

Four wheel drive hybrid propulsion with 500 kW produced by a V6 2.6-litre twin-turbocharged motor at the rear and a 200kW electric motor/generator in the front mean that the French Lion stands in good stead with the Wingless Peugeot’s 9X8 Hybrid Hypercar.
