We answer the question of whether the diesel or petrol Honda Brio is best and answer rather simple; there never was a diesel version.
The diminutive Honda Brio enjoyed a relative amount of success in South Africa amongst the price-conscious consumer that was looking for a compact city car to do daily duty.
It’s an attractive offering on the used car market as well with prices ranging from R200 000 for a clean, late model to a very affordable R70 000 at the bottom end of the spectrum.
The Honda Brio was first introduced to the world in 2011 with South Africa only seeing it at the end of 2012. It ran all the way through to 2019 when it was officially discontinued locally.
South Africa only saw the first generation and when the second generation was introduced internationally, South Africa continued for a short while with the previous model and opted to give the new looks to the Honda Brio Amaze sedan.
Which Honda Brio is better: diesel or petrol?
That’s not a hard question to answer as the little Honda Brio was only ever available with one engine.
Under the hood of the Brio you will find a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine doing duty with no diesel alternative available locally or internationally. The 1.2-litre engine produces 65 kW and was mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT gearbox in the auto models. Honda claimed 5.1 l/100km for the manual models and 6.0 l/100km for the CVT versions.
