With the launch of the facelifted 5th gen Honda City last month, Honda Cars India has now withdrawn three of its models from the Indian market: the Jazz hatchback, the WR-V sub-four-metre crossover, and the fourth-generation City sedan. While most automakers are adding more vehicles to their portfolio, Honda has struggled to live up to its reputation in the Indian market due to rigorous emissions requirements and an ageing product lineup. With that being said, the only cars offered by Honda Cars India are the facelifted Honda City and the Honda Amaze.
Honda has now discontinued a total of 9 cars in the Indian market in the last six years, an astounding quantity for an international company. Honda phased out the Brio and Mobilio in 2017, followed by the Accord, Civic, CR-V, BR-V, and Jazz diesel in 2020.
The Jazz, WR-V, and fourth-generation City are all outdated Honda cars that have been on the market in India for some time. All three are based on earlier platforms from the automaker, and the next-generation WR-V and Jazz are already available in overseas markets.
One of the main reasons for Honda taking these vehicles to the axe is the fact that with the RDE standards already in place, it makes very little sense for Honda to spend money and effort upgrading these older vehicles to satisfy the present strict emissions laws.
The Jazz and City were only available in petrol form, whilst the WR-V was available with both petrol and diesel engines. The fourth-generation City remained on the market for more than two years following the debut of the new City in September 2020.
Honda is actively at work designing new models exclusively for the Indian market. The mid-size SUV segment challenger is the first of the new products that we may expect to see very soon. The vehicle has already been spotted under camouflage multiple times and is expected to enter the market later this year. You can read more about it here.
Honda’s current lineup begins with the Amaze priced from Rs 6.99 lakh to Rs 9.57 lakh while the Honda City is priced at Rs 11.49 lakh to Rs 20.49 lakh for the eHEV.
