Not quite sure how these two differ from each other? We explain what the one offers over the other and why you should budget more carefully if you choose a Mercedes-AMG model.
While none of us are strangers to the three letters namely A, M, and G, our readers have asked what the difference is between AMG models and AMG-Line cars from Mercedes-Benz or Mercedes-AMG:
The fundamental difference is this: the AMG Line adds cosmetic differences designed to add to the overall look and feel of the car, while an AMG model features a high performance engine designed with driving performance in mind.
Both the cosmetic trim and the high performance engines are borne from the rich racing heritage of Mercedes-Benz. The letters AMG stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach. Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher were the original founders of AMG and Großaspach was Aufrecht’s birth place.
Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, began AMG as a racing engine forge in Germany in 1967. This new venture continued the rich racing history of Mercedes-Benz, which began with the Silver Arrow in 1934. Today, AMG represents the highest standard of Mercedes-Benz, whether the slick styling of the AMG Line trim, or the roaring power of an AMG engine. – Mercedes Benz
AMG Line
We’ve already established that AMG Line nomenclature denotes the sporty trim bits that make your ‘normal’ Mercedes-Benz considerably more special and athletic looking. These include man-made leather seats, that unmistakable diamond grille, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. Other design details may include defined stitching in the upholstery, AMG floor mats and stainless steel pedals, and may also include optional equipment packages to further enhance your pride and joy.
Mercedes-AMG vs. AMG Line
Most Mercedes-Benz models have AMG variants that offer serious performance and all-around athleticism. Let’s take the A-Class for example: The Mercedes-AMG A35 hatch 4MATIC is the most affordable AMG model in the range and retails for R941 350. Should you prefer a ‘normal’ A-Class with AMG Line styling features, the least expensive option will be the A200 hatch AMG-Line for R689 554. The quicker Mercedes-Benz A250 hatch AMG Line will set you back R753 176. (Prices correct at the time this article was published, but regular price increases are to be expected.)
Those who desire true sportsmanship from their cars and who can afford to make those monthly repayments will opt for a Mercedes-AMG model. We reviewed the 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45 S (see above & below), read it here.

According to the brand, most AMG engines are hand-crafted by a single engineer whose signature will be on the car once completed.
One’s things for sure, you’ll know an AMG for its sound before anything else. The roaring engines, starting at a 4-cylinder turbo through to a thundering V12, add to the absolute adrenaline rush that comes from getting behind the wheel.
As an AMG customer you will also be invited to exclusive events and have access to AMG Private Lounge membership. You will also be gifted an AMG Driving Academy Driving Experience”. (Please note that this offer isn’t valid on used AMGs.)
Let’s recap
A Mercedes-Benz AMG Line model only looks more sporty, while Mercedes-AMG refers to the model’s potent engine and sporty driving characteristics, as well as AMG-specific styling. It goes without saying that the Mercedes-AMG model will incur higher fuel and insurance costs, so remember to factor this in when you budget for that new (or used) AMG.
