The festive season is here, the perfect time to plan an end-of-year road trip with friends and family.
For Western Cape residents, there’s certainly no shortage of places to choose from, such as Langebaan up the west coast or one of the many Garden Route destinations like Knysna and Plettenberg bay.
Unfortunately, fuel prices have risen dramatically in 2022, making it all the more important to plan out a budget beforehand, including what it will cost to drive to your choice of holiday destination.
Luckily, TopAuto has done the work for you, with calculations for how much it will cost to drive from Cape Town to 10 of the most popular holiday destinations in the province.
Cape Town to 10 popular holiday destinations
Using Cape Town city centre as our starting point, we measured the distance to each location according to the shortest route.
We then used a Toyota Corolla Cross, with its fuel consumption figure of 6.8l/100km, as our bench model as it is one of the best-selling cars in the country and should provide a good reflection of a typical family car.
The final piece of the puzzle is the fuel price, which is currently sitting at R22.51 per litre for petrol 93 in coastal regions.
At these rates, here is what Capetonians can expect to pay for fuel when travelling to one of the Western Cape’s most popular holiday destinations:
Location | Distance | Approximate travel time | Cost of fuel |
---|---|---|---|
Franschhoek | 81.4km | 1 hour, 7 minutes | R123.80 |
George | 428km | 4 hours, 46 minutes | R655.04 |
Hermanus | 121km | 1 hour, 34 minutes | R184.58 |
Knysna | 488km | 5 hours, 32 minutes | R747.33 |
Langebaan | 132km | 1 hour, 22 minutes | R202.59 |
Mossel Bay | 384km | 4 hours, 21 minutes | R587.51 |
Oudtshoorn | 420km | 4 hours, 52 minutes | R643.77 |
Plettenberg Bay | 520km | 6 hours | R796.85 |
Stellenbosch | 50km | 43 minutes | R76.53 |
Wilderness | 441km | 4 hours, 55 minutes | R675.30 |
For anyone planning to come back from their trip in January there is good news, too. Fuel prices are currently expected to come down by as much as R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3.50 per litre for diesel which could mean your return home may be a few rands cheaper.
You can also work out the cost of your own trip for any starting point and destination in the country using TopAuto’s Driving Cost Calculator.
