When Shell Malaysia first introduced its new and improved FuelSave 95 petrol in February 2023, it started a challenge to find the one Malaysian driver who would put the improved formulation to the test on the roads and squeeze more kilometres from each drop of fuel.
Shell constantly innovates to design products and develop better mobility solutions that match its customers’ needs. With the Shell FuelSave 95 petrol, Shell had made the claim of getting up to 15 km more per full tank (compared to the previous formula), thus improving fuel economy for its users. To prove that the improvements apply to the roads, Shell began to engage motorists across the country through the Shell FuelSave 95 Challenge 2023.
The effort was made across the regions i.e. North, South, East, Central and East Malaysia, to gather shared experiences of better fuel mileage and savings. “Now, not only are we able to quantify the fuel economy gained by the customers from a full tank of Shell FuelSave 95, we are also able to witness the unbelievable mileage experienced by our customers, which further proves our New + Improved Shell FuelSave95 to be truly better by far,” shared Seow Lee Ming, General Manager of Mobility, Malaysia.

The drivers with the best mileage per litre across the 5 regions came together for the first time to push their limits to be the champion among themselves. All participants drove the same model sedan and had a marshal as passenger who ensured all driving rules were adhered to. The rules included a minimum speed of 80 km/h (when safe to do so), air-conditioning remained at the preset setting, no coasting in Neutral gear, and no switching off of engine when stationary. All 5 cars were also fueled at the same pump. Ultimately it was Chin Li Qin from Johor who was crowned Malaysia’s Most Efficient Driver. Li Qin broke his previous record of 25.45 km/l by clocking in an astonishing fuel mileage of 28.23 km/l.

“I’m genuinely excited to win the Grand Finale of Shell FuelSave 95 Challenge 2023, and I was surprised when my name was announced as the champion. It was impressive to see all participants achieving mileage beyond the average benchmark. Some roads were quite challenging, but I tried to keep myself calm and drive like I normally do back in my hometown,” commented Li Qin who drove home with the grand prize of RM20,000.
He competed against Jeffrey Tan Teck Seng from Port Dickson, Ahmad Amirul Runass from Kuantan, Muhammad Jazli Mahathir from Ipoh, and Lai Siaw Feng from Kuching, proud representatives of their respective regions who successfully surpassed the average mileage of 18.5 km/l using Shell FuelSave 95.
The Grand Finale challengers were flagged off from Shell SM Alisha, Shah Alam, and drove through Cyberjaya – Bukit Jalil – Cheras – Ampang – Gombak – Sri Hartamas – Kota Damansara – Puncak Alam, before returning to the starting point. They drove through various of types of roads and terrain, including the new SUKE highway and clocked a total of about 121 km of driving distance.
The improved maingrade fuel with the latest formulation was unveiled after 5 years of extensive research and tests conducted by 150 fuel scientists across the globe. Besides lasting up to 15 km more per tank*A, the New + Improved Shell FuelSave 95 also:
