The new BRZ earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ is one of the best-driving cars to come out this year. A nearly perfect chassis paired with a more powerful 228-hp boxer-four engine and a sweet six-speed means magic on backroads and on the track. But driving satisfaction isn’t the only thing the BRZ does well. The car is also really safe in a crash, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The IIHS released its findings on the 2022 BRZ on Tuesday, along with a video showing off the car’s small-overlap crash test. The car scored a “Good” rating in every category of every crash test save for the Torso area of the side-impact test, where it earned an “Acceptable” rating. It also earned an Acceptable rating in the LATCH ease of use, which assesses how easy it is to install a child seat.
How did the BRZ get such a good score? Modern chassis engineering might have something to do with it. Designers develop cars from the ground up to pass these safety tests with flying colors. Additional welds and bracing for the 2022 model year mean an even stiffer body than last year’s car, which certainly helped.
Those who own or plan to own a Toyota GR86 will be pleased to know that car’s test scores are identical to the BRZ’s—not exactly a surprise considering the cars are nearly identical under the skin. So no matter which of the Toyobaru twins you go for, you’re getting a safe car.
