The Gymkhana video series is back with another round of crazy tyre-smoking stunts that this time include jumping a car across a river while a speedboat cruises below, and playing chicken with a Red Bull aerobatics plane.
The car in question is a Subaru WRX STi rally car specially built by Subaru Motorsports USA and Vermont SportsCar. Covered in dozens of wings, fins and scoops to help it stay planted at speeds of up to 150mph, it features acres of carbon fibre to slash the kerb weigh to a supermini-like 1190kg.
Under the bonnet is a 2.3-litre Subaru boxer engine, though this is no ordinary Impreza motor. The block and heads are made from billet aluminium and the engine internals come from Subru’s rallycross cars.
The result of all that is 862bhp, which driver Travis Pastrana puts to good use causing havoc in his home town of Annapolis, Maryland, in the 11th instalment of the popular YouTube video series.
Pastrana is sitting in for friend, rival, and fellow extreme sports nut, Ken Block, who established the Gymkhana franchise in 2008.
Apart form the boat and plane scenes, highlights of this year’s video include a heart-in mouth sequence where Pastrana drifts the Impreza so far wide at the docks his back wheel is actually over the water. The choreographed twin-drift section with a Subura BRZ is also impressive. If you've got a few minutes – and a strong stomach – it's worth a watch.
