So satisfying.
People love romanticizing the idea of a barn find or garage find. Discovering a long lost classic in someone's backyard does have a certain charm, but the reality is that these cars usually need a ton of work to bring them back to life. The first thing most people do once they've purchased a garage find classic is to give it a good wash. This ritual has become an internet sensation: people love watching old cars getting a good scrub after being neglected for so many years. In this video, we get to see a classic Porsche 928 getting its first wash in 15 years.
The last time we got to see something so satisfying was when an ultra-rare 1987 Porsche RUF Slantnose convertible got its first bath in a decade. Strap in, and enjoy the wash.
After months of negotiating, Ammo NYC finally got his hands on this 1988 Porsche 928, and describes it as “the most moldy, mossy, sap filled paint I've ever worked on.”
The Porsche 928 was Porsche's first water-cooled front-engined V8 model ever, and is now becoming highly collectible. Ammo NYC explains that this car has a single-stage paint job that was in desperate need of a pressure wash and compound polishing. This Porsche also had a serious mold issue inside the cabin, and the engine bay had been visited by at least one family of mice. This car was covered in moss, mold, and just general filth. To get rid of most of the dirt, a warm pressure wash is the first step, and makes for the most satisfying viewing. The difference between the washed and unwashed halves of the car is astonishing. As we get deeper into the clean it becomes clear that the family of mice had done more damage than expected, and the entire undertray is filled with urine.
After an intense pressure wash, the car was showing signs of paint pinching, where the paint heats up and cools down over years and basically sucks dirt into the pores of the paint job. With a bit of help from a steam gun, the paint pores open up, and the dirt comes right off. The interior also gets a deep steam clean, then gets a blast of compressed air to dry everything out. Watching the steam vac suck up years of gunk out of the interior carpets is better than taking drugs, and the end result is absolutely astonishing. This car won't be winning any concourse car shows any time soon, but it looks a thousand times better. Finally the car gets a full polish which transforms the exterior paint job. This might not be a classic Porsche 911, but seeing an old classic getting such good treatment is food for the soul.
