When Subaru launched the all-new 2015 Outback in late 2014, the fifth-generation of the popular utility wagon promised best-ever levels of comfort, quiet, and efficiency. Updates to the Outback’s looks and powertrain joined a newly-enhanced EyeSight system, and wider availability of safety equipment across the model range.

Though sized similarly to its predecessor, the fifth-generation Outback was notably roomier, with improved passenger volume, rear-seat legroom, and (especially) cargo volume. More rugged and assertive looks helped round out the package.

Under the skin, look for several powertrain teams including a popular 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine available with six-speed manual or Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), as well as a 3.6-litre flat-six engine, offering up to 256 horsepower. Four-cylinder models deliver about 175 hp, adequate for many shoppers.

All Outback models, regardless of trim grade or powertrain, feature basic ‘Symmetrical’ AWD. The manual transmission was not available with the six-cylinder engine.

Follow the related links for more information, specs, pricing, news and reviews on the fifth-generation Outback, and read on for 5 tips to help you find the best used Outback you can for the dollar.

Tip 1: Consider a 2017 or 2018 Outback

Test-driving shoppers may want to consider a 2017 or 2018 model for maximum value. For model-year 2017, upgraded comfort and convenience features were added, as was a new Premier with Technology Package trim grade.

The off-road “X-Mode” became standard on all models with the CVT transmission, Touring-grade models got an improved central command touch display with improved resolution and connectivity, and a larger battery was installed to help the Outback start more easily in extreme cold.

To enhance nighttime driving confidence, automatic high-beams and an auto-dimming rearview mirror were available this year, too.

For model year 2018, the Outback built on improvements from the previous year. Further improvements were applied to ride quality and comfort levels, the chassis was strengthened, and styling was updated, inside and out. Particularly, 2018 saw the Outback’s interior trimmed with more high-end materials, for a more upscale feel and look. Performance of the braking system, transmission, and certain safety systems was also improved.

Tip 2: Infotainment Problems

Some owners have reported problems with the Subaru Outback’s touch-screen head unit, particularly on later models from this vintage. Most have not.

On your test drive, confirm that the touch screen responds to your fingertips in all menus and sub-menus, and that you have no issue calling up and manipulating all available functions.

Some owners have reported touch screens that stop responding to touch. Other owner-reported issues include error messages, difficulty connecting to GPS (for navigation) or media sources (for audio playback), a non-responsive or slow-to-respond volume dial, and general freezing or crashing of the system.

Test-driving shoppers are advised to confirm that the Android Auto system in the Outback they’re considering is running flawlessly, too, if applicable.

Head unit problems like this can often be solved with a system reset or software update, though in some cases, expensive replacement hardware is required. If the head unit on the used Outback you’re considering isn’t working properly, you’ll want to know why before you buy.

Tip 3: Windshield Damage

A common complaint within the Outback owner’s community relates to the durability of the vehicle’s windshield, which some owners say is easily chipped, cracked, or damaged. This is one of the most commonly-discussed gripe in various owner’s forums. Thankfully, windshield damage is easy to spot on a test drive, so be on the lookout.

Remember that a damaged windshield may negatively affect the operation of the EyeSight safety system, and that replacing a windshield on an EyeSight equipped model may result in additional costs if the system needs to be re-calibrated at the dealership.

If you notice any windshield damage on your test drive, obtain a quote to replace it, and call it into your pricing negotiations.

Tip 4: Dead Batteries

Just like potential windshield damage, surprise dead batteries are another issue commonly discussed by Outback owners online. Various factors affect the lifespan of a vehicle’s battery, and many owners of modern cars report batteries that last as little as 2 to 3 years.

A weak or dying battery can cause headaches from no-start situations to malfunctioning electronics throughout the vehicle. Many owners recommend pre-emptive battery replacement every few years to fend off irritating trouble. If you’re not positive the battery in the used Outback you’re considering is fresh and healthy, be sure to have it tested or replaced. Doing so can make a notable improvement in vehicle reliability.

Tip 5: Wheel Bearing Troubles

Some Outback owners from this generation have reported premature wheel bearing wear and failure; most have not. If the used Outback you’re considering has one or more bad wheel bearings, you’ll likely hear a rubbing, whining, groaning or roaring sound at certain speeds (particularly, higher ones). Some owners say that failing wheel bearings cause a helicopter-like sound from beneath the vehicles; others describe a continuous roaring sound.

Quiet the cabin of the Outback you’re test driving, and be on the lookout for unwanted sounds like this. If you notice any, have the vehicle professionally inspected before you buy. Ignoring the warning signs of a bad wheel bearing can lead to progressive deterioration of the driving experience or even a serious accident. A professional can quickly diagnose problems like these during a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI).

Final Thought

These tips are intended to help test-driving shoppers more easily identify possible trouble areas reported by some owners. An attentive test-drive and shopping process that focuses on the areas above can help you find a first-class example of a second-hand Subaru Outback.
