2022 Aston Martin DBX hybrid: what is it?
The DBX is the debut SUV from Aston Martin, and it’s selling well. So well in fact that some people are calling it ‘the car which could save Aston’ – it’s no secret the British brand has been navigating some finically choppy waters for the past…well, for decades.
Partly to capitalise on this success and partly a response to increasingly draconian fleet emissions laws, Aston is developing some electrified versions of the DBX, and that’s what we see here.
Cosmetically it is identical to the current 4.0-litre V8 model, but what gives the game away is the yellow sticker we can see in the rear windscreen – that sticker is there to tell safety marshals at The Nürburgring that the car is a hybrid of some kind, which affects how things like a car fire should be dealt with.
The first hybrid DBX will be a mild hybrid which means the engine can be downsized but performance will still be impressive, plus of course MPG and CO2 emissions should improve. A plug-in hybrid model is expected to follow, but not until late next year.
2022 Aston Martin DBX hybrid: what is it powered by?
Because Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG are very cosy bedfellows these days the mild hybrid DBX will likely use the 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit found in the AMG 53 series (the current DBX uses the 4.0-litre V8 used in AMG 63 cars).
With the help of an electric starter motor, the DBX hybrid could produce a respectable 429hp and 520Nm of torque, although it’s worth pointing out Aston is yet to reveal any form of performance figures at this stage.
The plug-in hybrid could produce over 700hp because it will partner an electric motor with the existing V8 engine, which is a very exciting prospect.
2022 Aston Martin DBX hybrid: when will it be on sale?
We expect the finished version of the car to be revealed by the end of 2021, which means order books could open as early as the first quarter of 2022.
2022 Aston Martin DBX hybrid: how much will it cost?
This could be the best bit of all: while Aston is still being quite tight-lipped about the car in general it should cost less than the current V8 model as it’s less powerful.
Prices for the V8 start at £161,500 so mild-hybrid version could cost around the £140K mark, plus it should be cheaper to run. Still not exactly a cheap car, but a more affordable way to own one of the coolest SUVs on the market.
