2022 Porsche 911 Sport Classic: what is it?
First of all, Porsche has not officially confirmed that it is bringing back the Sport Classic, but these pictures prove it is at least thinking very seriously about it.
The last 911 Sport Classic appeared in 2010 as a special edition of the 997 generation 911, limited to just 250 examples. It was based on the Carrera S but had a number of styling revisions and performance tweaks.
It’s these signature styling cues that are giving the game away in these pictures: we can see the Sport Classic ducktail spoiler, double bubble roof and the bespoke Fuchs five-spoke alloy wheels.
The front and back bumpers appear to be taken from the 911 Turbo S, but it’s unlikely this will be used as the base car as this test mule is missing the gaping air intakes which the Turbo S needs to keep the engine cool.
What’s encouraging for fans of the 911 Sport Classic is the fact this prototype looks very near to being production-ready.
2022 Porsche 911 Sport Classic: what is it powered by?
If Porsche repeats history and the Sport Classic is once again based on the Carrera S then it will be powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged flat-six petrol engine.
In the Carrera S it produces 444bhp, but it’s likely power will be increased via some ECU trickery and a new exhaust system. A solid estimate would be around 500bhp, but whether that’s enough to erode the Carrera S’s 3.7-seconds 0-62mph remains to be seen.
There is a rumour the Sport Classic will use the engine currently found in the new 911 GTS, which is a bit more powerful at 478bhp, but until there’s official word from Porsche it will have to remain a rumour.
2022 Porsche 911 Sport Classic: when will it go on sale?
We should see the finished version by the end of the year which means order books could open at the end of 2021 or early 2022.
But if you want one you’ll need to keep refreshing the Porsche website – all 250 examples of the last Sport Classic were sold in less than 48 hours.
2022 Porsche 911 Sport Classic: how much will it cost?
A lot, which is all we know for sure. The fact it is so exclusive means there’s a premium attached, and the last Sport Classic sold for £140,000 a pop, and that was over a decade ago.
It’s unlikely prices will start any lower than £160,00.
