Triumph Speed 400 & Scrambler 400 X – 5 Key Differences

British two-wheeler manufacturer Triumph has finally revealed the much-awaited Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X motorcycles. As such, here are some key differences between the Triumph Speed 400 and Triumph Scrambler 400 X motorcycles.

Design

The new Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles look quite similar with their ‘tear-drop’ shaped fuel tank and circular design elements such as LED headlamps, LED turn indicators, rear-view mirrors and LED tail lamps. However, there are a few differences.

For starters, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X is a more off-road focussed motorcycle. As a result, the motorcycle comes with different handlebars, split seats, different silencer, and even comes with headlight grille and knuckle guards. Furthermore, the colour options on both motorcycles are also likely to be different.

Suspension

While both the new Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles use the same tubular steel perimeter frame with a bolt-on rear subframe and a twin-sided cast aluminium swingarm, the suspension on both these motorcycles are quite different.

That being said, both motorcycles come equipped with 43mm USD forks at the front and a gas-charged monoshock with an external reservoir at the rear, the front and rear suspension travel rates are quite different to each other. This difference ensures better off-road ability to the Scrambler 400 X.

The Triumph Speed 400 has a wheel travel of 140mm at the front and 130mm at the rear, whereas the off-road-focussed Scrambler 400 X motorcycle has 150mm of wheel travel at both front and rear.

Brakes

The new Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle comes equipped with a 300mm fixed disc with four-piston caliper at the front. Whereas the rear braking setup consists of a 230mm fixed disc with floating calipers.

While the more off-road-focussed Triumph Scrambler 400 X also uses a similar braking setup, the front braking setup uses a larger 320mm disc. Moreover, both bikes come with dual-channel ABS for effective braking performance.

Tyres & Wheels

The Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle uses Metzeler Sportec M9RR tyres measuring 110/70 R17 at the front and 150/60 R17 at the rear. Whereas, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X uses Metzeler Karoo Street tyres measuring 100/90 R17 at the front and 140/80 R17 at the rear.

Dimensions & Weight

The Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle measures 2,056mm long, 795mm wide, 1,075mm tall, and sports a wheelbase of 1,377mm. Other than that, the new Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle weighs just 170 kilogrammes.

On the other hand, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X measures 2,117mm long, 825mm wide, 1,190mm tall, and sports a wheelbase of 1,418mm. Other than that, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X motorcycle also weighs slightly heavier at 179 kilogrammes.

The Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles are among the most-awaited motorcycles in the Indian two-wheeler market. Moreover, we expect both these motorcycles to be a runaway success, if the pricing is right.

That being said, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X is a more off-road focussed motorcycle and it will suit those who plan to take less explored roads of the country. On the other hand, the Triumph Speed 400 will appeal more to a wider audience with its tarmac-focussed nature.
