The Ministry of Transport will be reviewing the proposal to implement a standard 30 km/h speed limit for urban and residential areas, cities, and villages. The ministry is also prepared for the mixed reactions when the new speed limit standard is first implemented.
This announcement comes after the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) revealed that they are in the final steps of implementing the new 30/50 km/h speed limit in several parts of the Kuala Lumpur city centre.
Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, told the press that the ministry would engage with stakeholders to discuss the matter further.
Wee is also quick to point out that the new standard would not pass without some backlash. However, he ensures the public that the ministry will look into all angles before making a final decision.

The 30 km/h speed limit cap is part of a global road safety campaign known as the Stockholm Declaration. Malaysia is one of 80 countries that signed a pledge to half the number of road deaths by 2030 with the new 30 km/h speed cap.
The proposal to introduce the speed limit was made last year by MIROS director-general Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim.

He commented that the new speed limit would allow pedestrians to mix safely with road traffic and also benefit the environment.
