In Spain, the new Toyota RAV4 Adventure already has a price. The latest and highly fascinating version of Toyota’s successful hybrid SUV explodes onto the market, laden with features and a personality-filled exterior. It has a number of unique characteristics that serve to boost sales.

The new Toyota RAV4 Adventure was introduced to society in September of last year. The popular and profitable Toyota hybrid SUV debuted a new variant that emphasized the vehicle’s adventurous and country sides. The wait is finally over, after months of anticipation. In Spain, the new RAV4 Adventure already has a price and can be customized.

It’s an instantly recognizable design. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid receives a new black grille as part of the Adventure trim level. New black trimmings have been added to the fog lights. The Toyota badging has also been moved to fit all of the changes, and the front lower bumper has been given a gloss treatment.

The 19-inch matte gray alloy wheels, the wheel arches, and the new matte grey rear lower bumper are particularly noteworthy. A two-tone treatment on the bodywork is an option, which expands the personalization possibilities.

The new Toyota RAV4 Adventure’s features

Without a doubt, the link between the equipment and the pricing is another important factor in this new finish.

Because of its location in the range, it has a diverse set of equipment. The following is a list of the most impressive standard equipment:

The new Toyota RAV4 Adventure’s hybrid mechanics

In terms of the mechanicals, the new RAV4 is only available with the 220H engine and clever all-wheel drive system (AWD-i). And it’s only natural that this is the case, given that Toyota’s goal with the Adventure finish is to improve the SUV’s country appeal.

The RAV4 Adventure is thus propelled by a non-plug-in hybrid.

(HEV) propulsion system with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and tiny electric motors. It has a torque of 222 CV and is controlled by an e-CVT automated gearbox. According to the WLTP cycle, it has an average fuel consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers and CO2 emissions of 132 g/km. It’s also worth noting that, as a hybrid vehicle, it carries the DGT’s ECO (General Directorate of Traffic) environmental badge, with all the benefits it entails.

The Toyota RAV4 demonstrates that automobiles are becoming larger in general. The modern RAV4 has nothing in common with the first RAV4, which debuted in 1994 as a small fun car. It now fits easily into the ranks of compact SUVs like the VW Tiguan and Ford Kuga, with a length of 4.60 meters, and is thus suggested as a family car. In the ADAC test, the 218 hp front-wheel-drive hybrid and the 306 hp all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid had to show how good the new RAV4 actually is.

With the RAV4, round shapes appear to be out: Toyota refers to the extravagant play with surfaces, corners, and edges as “Polygonal Design.”

For an additional fee, the roof can be painted in a contrasting color, making the 1.69 meter high car appear flatter and stretched, rather than as bulky as some other SUVs.

There’s a lot of room and a spacious trunk.

One of the Toyota RAV4’s best features is its spacious trunk.

The occupants have substantially more mobility now that the wheels are three millimeters apart rather than the previous two centimeters. Even passengers with long legs will find plenty of legroom in the back seat: if the front seat is configured for a person 1.85 meters height, there is still adequate legroom in the back for individuals two meters tall.

The seating position is comfortable, with a seat height of 58 centimeters above the ground in the lowest setting, making getting in and out a breeze.

The fact that the RAV4 lacks a movable rear seat like its competition, the Tiguan, is therefore not a major flaw. A third row of seats is also not absent, as the competition Honda CR-V demonstrates that it is nothing more than a penalty box and that a compact SUV cannot function as a minibus.

Despite the fact that the vehicle’s length has remained the same, the trunk has grown. According to Toyota, it now has a capacity of 580 liters for holidays, folds down to 1690 liters when folded, and 520 to 1604 liters with the plug-in.

Although the ADAC tested values cannot fully prove this, the measured 470 to 1590 liters (plug-in: 430 to 1550 liters) are still an excellent value for this vehicle class.

The space miracle is also required; after all, the RAV4 must fill the void left by the Avensis family sedan, which has been withdrawn. Despite the fact that the Toyota Camry has returned to Germany, it is only available as a notchback sedan, not a station wagon.

Consumption in the hybrid test was 5.6 liters per 100 kilometers.

The RAV4 will not have a diesel engine. The 175-horsepower 2.0-liter petrol engine has subsequently vanished from the price lists. In the end, the hybrid was chosen by more than 90% of consumers. It produces 218 horsepower with front-wheel drive, and 222 horsepower with AWD-i all-wheel drive with an electric motor on the rear axle. As a result, the Japanese are not powerless: The drive appeared to be extremely confident in the ADAC test.

The front-wheel-drive RAV4 goes from zero to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds (four-wheel drive: 8.1). An intermediate sprint from 60 to 100 km/h takes just 4.8 seconds, which comes in handy when overtaking on back roads.

The RAV4 Hybrid, on the other hand, isn’t one of the fastest on the highway, with a top speed of only 180 km/h.

This should help save money on gas. Toyota claims that the hybrid version’s highway fuel consumption has been lowered by one liter when compared to the previous model. That was long overdue, as the predecessor had a reputation for being a heavy drinker. On the Autobahn, usage was an unacceptably high 9.4 liters in the ADAC Ecotest.

What about the current model? Is a lot more cost-effective. Although the hybrid drive’s advantages on the highway are limited (the electric motor primarily assists with starting, maintaining speed, and gentle acceleration), the highway test consumption was 8.0 liters of Super per 100 kilometers.

So 1.4 liters less than the previous model. In the city, the hybrid vehicle saves the most money: The top 3.6 liters Super / 100 km are measured. Overall, the RAV4 Hybrid has a decent average fuel consumption of 5.6 liters. Because of its acceptable exhaust emissions, the ADAC Ecotest awards it four out of five stars.

The range of consumption is thus fairly vast, which is mainly owing to the fact that the RAV4 can only go short distances completely on electricity as a normal hybrid. Because the constantly variable transmission lets the driver rapidly lift the accelerator pedal and prefer to float along calm, the Toyota hybrid-typical engine bellows when accelerating.

In the over 3000 euro more expensive AWD, up to 80% of the power goes to the rear axle, and a “Trail Mode” divides torque between the wheels. Off-road advantage: 15 millimeters more ground clearance and 15 millimeters shorter overhangs than the predecessor.

The Toyota has a decent level of suspension comfort when driving on the road, but it can’t keep up with flatter cars when it comes to driving dynamics on rapid serpentine routes. This can also be demonstrated in the ADAC avoidance test, which the RAV4 Hybrid passed with a notable amount of body roll.

Consumption in the plug-in test: 2.4 l + 15.2 kWh/100 km

And what does the plug-in hybrid have to offer? Starting with a fully charged battery, the plug-in RAV4 has a range of roughly 55 kilometers in the ADAC Ecotest’s electric cycle before the combustion engine kicks in. The use of pure energy is 24.6 kWh/100 km (including charging losses).

Driving in hybrid mode (externally chargeable battery empty) consumes 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers, which is much higher than the pure hybrid (see above). In urban regions, consumption is 6.1 liters, 5.4 liters on country routes, and 8.3 liters on the highway.

The hour of the plug-in has arrived if you combine the electric and hybrid routes and start with a fully charged battery. Over the first 100 kilometers, the plug-RAV4 burns 15.2 kWh of energy and 2.4 liters of gasoline in this configuration. Throughout all driving cycles, the particle filter provides reduced particle emissions. However, CO emissions are evident, and in the difficult road test with a significant proportion of full load, they are marginally increased. The bottom line is that the ADAC Ecotest only gives it three out of five stars.

The plug-top in’s speed is similarly limited to 180 km/h; according to the manufacturer, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 6.0 seconds. The ADAC Autotest’s measurements attest to the drive’s capability. In just 3.4 seconds, the RAV4 completes the intermediate sprint from 60 to 100 km/h. The SUV also performed admirably in the measurement from 15 to 30 km/h, achieving a time of 0.7 seconds. The fact that driving isn’t particularly enjoyable, despite the powerful drive train, is due to a lack of dynamic driving qualities, as well as the background noise, which is particularly taxing while driving quickly.

In the ADAC evasion test, this is not a good result.

The RAV4 plug-in does not perform well in the ADAC evasion test. The rear definitely pulls outwards even in the initial phase. When attempting to return to the original lane, the rear end explodes forcefully and can only be caught by a skilled driver. The electronic stability program (known at Toyota as VSC) intervenes far too late and is unable to prevent the rear end from breaking away.

When driving the RAV4 through the evasion test with lesser steering degrees, the SUV behaves uncritically, but the driving dynamics leave a lot to be wanted. The Toyota understeers a lot, leans to one side a lot, and lacks accuracy.

The SUV’s elevated center of gravity and hefty weight of 1.9 tons make it evident that it does not have the ideal evasive test conditions. Nonetheless, a number of competitors not only complete the driving maneuver safely, but they also inject some excitement into the driving dynamics.

The brakes are also deserving of criticism; the RAV4 only comes to a stop after 38.4 meters at 100 km/h. Most of your competitors are capable of doing a much better job.

Better assistance systems and more standard equipment are included in the fifth RAV4 model. LED headlights, automatic air conditioning, alloy wheels, and an automatic emergency brake helper are included in even the most basic equipment package.

The RAV4 is, in any case, an excellent example of basic active safety features. Cyclists and pedestrians can be identified up to 80 km/h, and an emergency brake helper with distance warning is standard. There’s even a speed restriction, cruise control, and adaptive speed assist.

The cruise control can use the speed limitations detected by the front camera. In addition, when reversing, the RAV4 from the tested equipment line warns of automobiles in the blind spot and cross traffic. There’s also a lane departure warning system and a sleepiness alert system.

Inside, the RAV4 retains the angular contour of the exterior design while emphasizing straight lines and good usability. The seven-inch touchscreen features touch-sensitive surfaces as well as eight fixed buttons on the edge that may be used to go to different menus quickly.

Interesting: Starting with the “Club” equipment level, a digital interior mirror is included, which can be converted from a regular rear-view mirror to a screen. This displays a very wide-angle camera image of what’s going on behind the automobile, greatly expanding the range of view. If, for example, the vision to the rear is obstructed by large back passengers or bags loaded to the roof, the technique makes sense.

It does, however, have a disadvantage: it is difficult to judge how far away other automobiles are at first. An conventional mirror allows you to see better spatially.
