The new Toyota GR Supra is a brilliant sports car that revives a much loved nameplate. Modern styling that’s respectful to its original concept makes for a machine that’s easy on the eye, too. However, the world has been eagerly awaiting some new variants of Supra that perhaps play homage to models of the past. The Sport Top concept does just that.
Originally planned to be revealed at the SEMA show in 2020 – but we all know how 2020 has been – the Toyota GR Supra Sport Top concept car features a removable roof panel for when the weather is good enough to go topless. Just like the modern classic Mk4 Supra, there’s no fabric roof or folding mechanism, instead an old-school two-piece hard top that’s detached and stowed in the boot.
Another reason forgoing down the detachable roof route is that it preserves the coupe’s silhouette somewhat. By maintaining the raked rear windscreen this car is still recognised as the same model as before. We also really love the addition of this Supra’s retro spoiler – a true throwback to the fourth-generation car.
Other tweaks to the styling includes new glossy skirting that runs the car’s perimeter, a more aggressive front splitter, exaggerated diffuser and central exhaust exits. Beneath its skin is further structural reinforcement to return structural soundness to the same levels as the coupe. The whole car looks remarkably production ready, with no crazy design elements typical of concept cars, especially at a show as extravert as SEMA.
At this point in time there are no plans for a production car, but there’s clearly an audience out there for an open-top Supra. We have a feeling that this ‘concept’ is more of a toe in the water to gauge reaction. We like it Toyota, now let’s see one in the showroom!
