For over seven decades Porsche has produced some of the finest sports and supercars the world has ever seen. Through its masterful performances in motorsport, its road cars have become even better informed. Top speed is only one simple metric to measure performance, but it’s a fun game of Top Trumps to play.
Here’s the top 10 fastest Porsche road cars.
2016 Porsche 911 Turbo = 199mph
Just shy of 200mph is a pretty high bar to set for the rest of this list, but you’ll soon notice that the Porsche 911 Turbo is a persistent name here. Claiming a top speed of 199mph, the Turbo of 2016 marked a huge jump in performance. It proved to be almost half a second faster to 62mph than its predecessor!
However, it you want to be a member of the 200mph club, you’ll need to read on.
2016 Porsche 911 R = 200mph
Some say that the Porsche 911 R was the perfect 911. It cherrypicked the best bits of a GT3 and harnessed the power of a 4.0-litre flat-six. 991 of this 991 generation car were ever built, with the model becoming a huge collectors item. They once commanded a huge price premium until Porsche released the Touring Package for the GT3 that effectively created a very similar car.
Watch this space as we’d expect this car to become an appreciating asset once again.
2008 Porsche 911 GT2 = 204mph
A return for the fabled GT2 nameplate for the 997 generation of 911 has enthusiasts salivating. This white-knuckle-ride of a supercar packed 523bhp, a number supplied to the rear wheels exclusively. In damp conditions this car was known for spinning up its rear wheels in second gear in a search for traction.
GT2s of this era rightly deserve their reputations as widow makers.
2009 Porsche 911 GT2 RS = 205mph
As if the 997 GT2 wasn’t enough, this variant pushed the 3.6-litre flat-six engine to 611bhp, considerably more than the car on which it is based. 0-62mph flashed past in 3.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 205mph. It was handy through the corners too, being 70kg lighter than the regular GT2.
These GT2 RS are now very collectable.
2016 Porsche 911 Turbo S = 205mph
Just like its lesser Turbo sibling, the Turbo S also pushed the performance envelope for all-wheel drive sports cars. With an additional 40bhp over the regular Turbo, the S could easily do 0-62mph in under three seconds. In fact, many have timed the car’s sprint as being considerably faster in reality.
It might be four years-old, but this Turbo S still shames many other performance cars.
2017 Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive = 205mph
Based on the regular Turbo S, the Exclusive numbers just 500 examples worldwide. It features bespoke touches such as a naked carbon stripe, unique interior, and an additional 17bhp. Each car was finished in Golden Yellow Metallic – a look not suited to the shy.
It didn’t improve on the Turbo S’ top speed, but it did fractionally speed up its 0-124mph dash that clocked in at 9.6 seconds.
2020 Porsche 911 Turbo S = 205mph
It’s the daddy of the new 992 Porsche 911 range. The all-new Porsche 911 Turbo S is simply one of the fastest road production cars money can buy right now. Sure, there will be a new GT2 along soon enough, but the all-wheel drive stability of a Turbo model provides the ultimate reassurance when pushing on through triple figures. Its 205mph top speed might also be the same as its predecessor, but its conservative 0-62mph run of 2.7 seconds is headline worthy.
A 3.7-litre flat-six engine is responsible for this cruise missile rivalling performance, a motor that’s supplemented by two sizeable turbochargers. It generates a potent 641bhp and 800Nm of torque, figures that enable this 911 to shame supercars deemed beyond its purview. Beyond being fast in a straight line, this 911 Turbo S is the most engaging to drive yet. The electronic nannies allow for some naughty behaviour before kicking in.
2006 Porsche Carrera GT = 208mph
For Porsche apostles, this car is the Holy Grail. The Porsche Carrera GT was arguably the last ‘hairy chested’ supercar, capable of commanding respect from every driver that sat behind the wheel. Limited driver aids, manual transmission and that V10 engine. This supercar howls all the way to its top speed of 208mph, a chorus that doesn’t come from the marque’s traditional flat-six.
The V10 in this Carrera GT was actually the result of a stillborn Le Mans project, with the engine repurposed for use in this supercar. In fact, the endurance engine actually stemmed from an abandoned F1 unit. Apparently unloved and shelved over its history, this 5.7-litre motor is worshiped today. Its 604bhp gives this carbon fibre supercar enough shove to get from 0-62mph in just 3.3 seconds. This car is quite the beast to tame, but increasing values highlight what a rare experience a Carrera GT is today.
2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS = 211mph
Representing something of a swan song for 991 GT cars before the introduction of the 992 generation, this GT2 RS is a high watermark indeed. The heavily turbocharged motor kicked-out 691bhp, with all of it sent to the rear wheels just like its forefather. However, this GT2 RS proved far more manageable than incarnations of old.
A top speed of 211mph was far from its most impressive attribute, but it earns it the number 2 spot on this list.
2013 Porsche 918 Spyder = 214mph
Taking its natural place at the top of this list, the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar is capable of clocking 214mph. It’s powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine and a pair of electric motors for a total output of 875bhp. A 0-60mph run of 2.5 seconds also makes it one of the fastest accelerating road cars out there.
The Porsche 918 Spyder is victorious, but for how much longer?
