The full reveal happens midday on May 15th.
McLaren is giving us one last tease of their new Grand Tourer before the full reveal happens next Wednesday. Well, maybe it’s the last one, because McLaren has been known to drop some small detail dumps here and there. So here’s what they’ve aaded today and a bit about what we already know about the new McLaren GT.
The GT was first shown, in camouflage, back in March. It only feels like longer because McLaren is in the middle of its massive Track25 business plan. The plan is set to see the supercar builder put out 18 new models and variants by the year 2025, spending around $2 billion to do it. The McLaren GT is the fourth car in the campaign, so you’ll have to forgive us if it feels like we’ve been seeing it for longer.
At that announcement, McLaren said that the car, which didn’t yet have a name, would “be a car that combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability.” Not that the current Maccas are uncomfortable, but this one would be aimed at covering massive distances with equally massive comfort. Instead of beating all of your friends around your favourite track.
A month later, we got some more details. Including more camouflaged photos. McLaren was still calling it “the McLaren of Grand Tourers” which now that we know the official name will be McLaren GT seems a little on the nose. We were told that the car had completed some rather unique validation testing. Like a 1,600 km drive from McLaren’s base in Barcelona back to the head office in the UK. That’s one sting for two occupants and a full boot of luggage. The purpose? “Help the team to confirm the new model is both comfortable and refined over the long distances a grand tourer is expected to consume.”
So now we have the name. And a new photo. And a video that doesn’t show off every part of the car, but it definitely gives us a better look.
We still don’t have powertrain information for the GT. McLaren has said that it is “the only Grand Tourer to share its DNA with the 250mph McLaren Speedtail,” but the company has also said that it won’t be part of the company’s current Sports, Super, Ultimate Series lineup. So how much power will it have? A lot. Though not likely as much as the 1,050 hp Speedtail.
The full reveal happens midday on the 15th, and we’ll bring you all the juicy details when we get them.
