Polestar has revealed its latest model, the Polestar 4 mid-size SUV, which is set to go into production before the end of 2023, with deliveries starting early 2024.
The Polestar 4 follows the Polestar 2 crossover which is headed for a major update later this year, and the Polestar 3 large SUV, which is set to arrive before the end of 2023.
Unlike the other models in Polestar’s range, which utilise Volvo platforms, the Polestar 4 moves onto a new platform for the brand, the SEA platform developed by its Chinese parent, Geely.
Polestar’s CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, says the Swedish EV brand has taken a “fundamental new approach to SUV Coupe design” with the Polestar 4, saying that it is not a modified version of an existing SUV, but one designed from the ground up to be a coupe. As such, the Polestar 4 will “celebrate rear occupant comfort and experience”.
The Polestar 4 is also the fastest car the brand has ever developed, boasting a 0-100km/h sprint time in 3.8 seconds, with a 400kW/686Nm dual-motor setup.
It is slightly larger in all dimensions than the current Porsche Macan, although a new-generation Macan is due to be revealed imminently and is likely to grow as it moves onto VW Group’s PPE 800v platform, at least in electric form.
The two long-range versions of the Polestar 4 expected to be available at launch will be equipped with a huge 102kWh battery pack, good for a 560km range on the WLTP combined testing cycle. To back this large battery size, the Polestar 4 is set to have 200kW DC charging capability and 22kW AC charging capability, to keep charging times low (32 minutes on DC, and 5.5 hours on AC). The Polestar 4 will also include vehicle-to-load technology, allowing it to power external devices via its Type 2 CCS charging port.
Interestingly, the battery is 400 volt (as opposed to the 800-volt unit which will debut in the larger Polestar 3) and is of the high-output NMC type sourced from Chinese battery giant, CATL.
All-wheel drive versions are capable of disconnecting the front motor completely to maximise efficiency, while the rear-wheel drive Long Range variant (powered by a 200kW/343Nm motor) is capable of a 600km WLTP combined range.

Standard equipment levels will be high, with a new 15.4-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen with the latest version of Android Automotive operating system, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.7-inch head-up display, a full-length glass roof, digital rear-vision mirror, and sustainable interior materials, some of which are said to be made from 100 per cent recycled polyester.
The Polestar 4 will also feature 20- to 22-inch wheels depending on the option pack chosen.
The brand will also include a high level of safety equipment as standard, including an active suite consisting of 12 cameras, one radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, as well as nine airbags.
Despite the high level of standard equipment, Polestar says to expect pricing to start from the equivalent of AUD$100,000, with deliveries starting in global markets in 2024.
Next up for Polestar in Australia is the arrival of the updated and now rear-wheel-drive Polestar 2, while the Polestar 3 large SUV is due before the end of the year.
The Polestar 5 GT is due to be revealed next year, while the brand also confirmed late last year its roadster concept will enter production as the Polestar 6 in 2026.
