A large classic car auction which took place in Johannesburg on 5 December has seen several cars sell for close to R1 million.
The auction was run by Creative Rides and High Street Auctions, and the cars on offer were part of the late Louis Coetzer’s “world-class collection”.
Vehicles on offer ranged from American models from the 1950s and 1960s, to rare Mercedes-Benz cars.
“More than 275 bidders in nine countries competed to own a piece of automotive history, when 139 classic cars from the collection went under the hammer,” said the auctioneers.
“The auction exceeded our expectations on every level – from the extraordinary amount of consumer interest, to the number of registered bidders, to the prices achieved,” said Creative Rides CEO Kevin Derrick.
Highest bids
The highest bid on the day was R1 million for a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 Dora.
This was followed by R900,000 for a 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 Adenauer W186, and R900,000 for a 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Coupe.
“The rare 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230S Fintail station wagon sold for R775,000, a 1965 Pontiac Catalina Convertible for R710,000, and a stunning 1964 Ford Thunderbird for R800,000.”
High Street Auctions Director Joff van Reenen said according to their research, this was “by bidder volume and bidding numbers” South Africa’s largest ever collector car auction.
He added that while the majority of bids originated from within South Africa, many of the cars were bought by foreign buyers bidding online.
These cars are now being prepared for shipping to various international destinations.
