- This custom-built Mercedes uses a Mercedes-AMG 4-Door as its base, but was wholly restyled.
- The Will.I.AMG takes inspiration from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and gullwing SLS.
- Built by West Coast Customs, this custom build was the subject of a six-part documentary mini series.
What happens when you take a Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and design elements from the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV? Answer: the Will.I.AMG. Designed in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG and West Coast Customs works to blend the two luxurious Mercedes products to spawn a unique machine that won’t get lost at your local cars and coffee.
As for why modify a Mercedes, will.i.am explains:
“I grew up in a ghetto. I grew up with hip-hop. I watched legendary hip-hop artists rap about Mercedes, so it was always a dream to own a Mercedes. For a lot of inner-city kids, owning a Mercedes is a symbol of progress and advancing out of struggle.”
As you can tell by the enormousdoors, this really did start life as a four-door AMG GT. Now sporting only a pair of doors, this machine hardly resembles its foundation. The design borrows styling ideas from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the gullwinged Mercedes-Benz SLS. Translating the boxy design language from the G-Class onto the sweeping AMG GT 4-Door isn’t an easy challenge, and like all custom cars: up to you to decide if it works.
The car is only part of the story, however. The teams involved also worked to document the process in a six-part series dubbed DRIVE. It’s hard to say how you can watch this documentary series right now, but it is scheduled to hit the Cannes Film Festival outside of competition later this year. If you were fortunate enough to be part of the reveal party this week, you should have seen a preview of the series.
