Compact diesel SUV taking on a petrol hot hatch is not something you see that often
In a YouTube video uploaded by Yagya Sharma, the Swift is compared with a very different car from an altogether different segment, the Hyundai Venue, in a drag race.
Unlike the Swift, the Venue is a compact SUV with higher ground clearance and more kerb weight. It also has a diesel-powered heart, which is much different from the petrol-powered engine of the Swift. This video gives a brief idea of whether a peppy petrol-powered hatchback is faster or a torquey diesel-powered compact SUV.
Overview
When it comes to compact hatchbacks, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has always remained a top favourite of both regular car buyers and driving enthusiasts. The peppy engine options and excellent handling have earned the Swift a cult status, which has remained mostly unchallenged in sheer sales volumes.
The Contenders
The cars competing in the drag race here are their BS4-spec versions. The Maruti Swift here is the pre-facelift version of the third-generation model, which used to come with a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. This powertrain pumps out 83 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque, and the version used in the drag race here is the manual version of the car, which has a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Hyundai Venue competing with the Swift in the drag race here is a stark contrast from it. It is the BS4-spec diesel version of the compact SUV, which used to come with a 1.4-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The power and torque outputs of this engine in the Venue are 90 PS and 220 Nm.
Maruti Suzuki Swift petrol and Hyundai Venue diesel: Drag Race
The answer lies in the video
This drag race between the two very different cars consisted of five rounds. After the first two rounds, the drivers of both the vehicles switched their seats for the next three rounds. In all five rounds, the Maruti Suzuki Swift won over the Hyundai Venue by good margins, despite having a smaller and lesser powerful and torquey engine.
How is lower powered Swift faster?
But Hyundai Venue has become a popular choice in the market
Compared to the diesel-powered Hyundai Venue, the Maruti Suzuki Swift petrol has a much lower kerb weight and a lighter petrol engine which is more rev-happier. In addition to this, if we analyze this comparison more technically, the diesel engine of the Venue produces its peak torque output at a lower rpm, unlike the Swift.
This requires quicker shifts, which is the reason why the Venue required more gear shifts to catch up with the Swift. And it is the reason why the Swift turns out to be a quicker accelerating car on a flat stretch, despite having a smaller petrol engine with lesser power and torque numbers.
