At one point or another, every manufacturer is going to have to conform with stricter emissions regulations and fleet averages. The solution for many has been to go electric, and that includes makers of high performance cars. Porsche’s first EV is impressive in many respects, but its new starting price might be what impresses the most.
Ok, so £70,690 is still a lot of money no matter which way you frame it, but this new entry variant of the Taycan – called simply that – is much cheaper than the £83,530 Taycan 4S. From that you might be able to decipher that this new model does without all-wheel drive and instead sends its power to its rear wheels exclusively.
The rear-wheel drive Porsche Taycan was actually first offered in China, but it will likely prove a great asset to Porsche in the UK. Lower price point aside, there’s a strong possibility that this Taycan might be even better to drive than a 4S.
There is a pair of battery options for the new car, one with a 79kWh unit and the other Performance Battery Plus being 93kWh. The smaller battery helps generate 402bhp and offers a range of 268 miles, while its larger counterpart a strong 469bhp and 301 mile range. Despite the power difference, both versions will crack 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds, but the Performance Battery Plus car will reach a 12mph higher top speed at 155mph.
Charging is impressive for both battery types with the standard capable of charging at up to 225kW and the Performance Battery Plus pushing things further at 270kW. Each will charge from 5 – 80% in just over 22 minutes.
The Porsche Taycan has already won a series of awards as a genuinely useable everyday all-electric performance car. This new price point allows even more people to join the Taycan club and will now doubt bolster sales of the already popular model.
