The Polestar 4 is the fastest Polestar to date
Gothenburg, Sweden – Polestar has taken the wraps off their latest coupé SUV, the Polestar 4. The new car made its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier, less than a year after we first saw the Polestar 3 SUV in the flesh.
Within the Polestar brand portfolio, the Polestar 4 is intended to sit between the Polestar 2 Sedan and the larger Polestar 3 in terms of size and price. But in terms of performance, the Polestar 4 is ahead of the curve.
From the outset, the Polestar 4’s front fascia borrows elements from the Polestar 5 concept and it now has a smoother front profile with the same split dual-blade headlamps from the Polestar 5. Being a coupé SUV, the Polestar 4’s profile is considerably lower than that of the Polestar 3’s, with a steep rake in the aft of the cabin. As a result of these design cues (including flush door handles), the Polestar 4 is the most aerodynamic production vehicle from Polestar with a drag coefficient of just Cd 0.269.
Instead of compromising the low roofline for improved passenger occupancy, the Polestar 4 does away with the rear window to maintain its svelte roofline. To compensate for the lack of visibility, the rearview mirror features a live digital feed that is linked to a roof-mounted camera in the rear.
At launch, the Polestar 4 will be offered in two guises – a Long Range Single Motor (LRSM) variant and a more powerful Long Range Dual Motor (LRDM). It’s a similar model differentiation we’ve seen in the Polestar 2 SRSM and Polestar 2 LRDM.
Both models will be built atop Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) Platform, which deviates from the SPA2 platform that will underpin the Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90.
The lower-powered variant produces 272 horsepower and 343Nm of torque from a single motor mounted on the rear axle. On paper, it has a quoted WLTP range target of up to 600km with an average efficiency figure of 14.8-14.9kWh/100km.
On the more powerful end of the spectrum, the Polestar 4 LRDM has a more potent dual-motor AWD drivetrain that generates 544 horsepower and 686Nm of torque. 0-100km/h is quoted at 3.8 seconds, which makes it the fastest Polestar when it enters production. Quicker than the Polestar 1 PHEV’s 4.1 second century sprint, and quicker than the 4.7 seconds it takes the Polestar 2 LRDM and Polestar 3 LRDM Performance Pack.
It’ll be some time before the Polestar 5 four-door GT with its intended 872bhp enters the fray but until then, it’s safe to say that the Polestar 4 Long Range Dual Motor will be the fastest accelerating Polestar.
