If you asked the many smart engineers at Porsche to make their ultimate 911, this is what they would build.
The Porsche 911 GT3 is Road & Track’s 2022 Performance Car of the Year. That says a lot about how I feel about it, and how the whole staff feels. We’ve written more than one deep review of the car, both on track and off. You should read those.
The reason we chose it boiled down to one simple thing: If you asked the smart and discerning engineers at Porsche (and there are many of them there) to build the ultimate 911, this is what they would make. It is a blend of the perfect track car and the perfect road car (with some necessary caveats). It has a six-speed manual and a 4.0-liter flat-six that is, of course, naturally aspirated. It produces a stunning 125 horsepower per liter—and even still feels more powerful than that at around 8500 rpm. The GT3 is full of flashy (though never frivolous) racing engineering. Some of it you can see, such as the vertically ducted radiator vents in the front trunk lid, or the graceful swan-neck wing in the rear. There’s also a functional rear diffuser, which marks the first time the men and women of Stuttgart affixed one to a road-going 911. Altogether, the racing architecture ups the downforce more than 150 percent over the previous GT3, the weight is essentially the same.

I could go on. This is a magically fast car that demands more of you as a driver the more you drive it. As sports cars evolve into hybrid and EV confections in the future, this will grow to become a high-water mark in the history of Porsche. Go get one. Now.
