Tata Motors has been leading the ‘charge’ when it comes to EVs in India, and its Nexon EV and Tigor EV are two of the most accessible EVs in the Indian market right now. Tata Motors also revealed 2 new electric concepts, the Avinya EV and the Curvv Electric SUV this month. However, with the Tigor EV and Nexon EV getting rather small 26 kWh and 30.2 kWh batteries that deliver a claimed range of 306 km and 312 km respectively, what’s been missing from Tata’s portfolio is a long range EV.
That fact is about to change soon though, as Tata Motors is set to launch an extended range version of the Tata Nexon EV on May 11, 2022. The extended range version will be sold alongside the version on sale right now, and will likely be ₹ 3-4 lakh costlier too.
The battery pack is expected to have a capacity of around 40 kWh, making it 30% larger than that of the model currently on sale. The larger battery pack might raise the floor and eat up into the boot space of the SUV, reducing its practicality a little. The claimed range of the electric SUV could be upwards of 400 km, which means that the EV could return somewhere above the 300 km mark in terms of real world range.

With the higher cost, the Nexon EV extended range version will face competition from other brands’ electric cars, like the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric, which sit a segment above the current Nexon EV. To cope with that, the Nexon EV could get some added features, like multiple regen modes, ventilated front seats, an air purifier, cruise control, and a faster home wall box charger.
