The time has come for the current Porsche 911's first major update.
The 992-generation Porsche 991 went on sale for the 2020 model year, starting with the current-generation Carrera. Since then, the 992-gen has expanded with the new Turbo and GT3, but now the time has come for the current 911's first facelift. Development of the updated 992-generation Porsche 911 has begun, and our spies have already caught a prototype undergoing testing previewing the changes we can expect to see.
Spied in Sweden tackling the snow, the prototype is based on the 911 Turbo, distinguished by its wider fenders and ducktail spoiler. Since this is an early prototype, the only noticeable changes are on the front bumper.
Compared to the current model, the adjustable active aero vents in the front bumper are now vertical instead of horizontal. The redesigned air intakes also look larger and the central radars have been updated. There are no noticeable changes at the back yet, but the camouflage suggests the rear light bar could get tweaked.
Inside, the dashboard is covered up, so we're expecting the refreshed 911 to get a fully digital instrument cluster with no analog dials. The design will most likely replicate the Taycan's digital dashboard. While the launch of the first hybrid Porsche 911 is expected to coincide with the facelift, there are no yellow stickers on the Turbo prototype, so the powertrain is not electrified in this case.
This means the 911 Turbo facelift will be powered by the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo boxer six as the current car producing 572 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque in the standard Turbo and 640 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque in the Turbo S. Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic transmission, enabling the Turbo S to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds.
It's going to be a long wait for the production model to arrive, though, as the facelifted Porsche 911 is expected to go on sale in 2023. We're expecting the Carrera to be refreshed first, so Porsche should start testing Carrera facelift prototypes soon.
