Sony is introducing a ‘Perfect for PlayStation 5’ campaign for Bravia XR televisions, specially designed to work perfectly with the PlayStation 5 console and offer a superior gaming experience with immersive picture and sound. Support Bravia XR models are Z9J, A90J, A80J, X95J, and X90J.
‘Perfect for PlayStation 5’ TVs will bring in two brand-new PS5 exclusive features – Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. These TVs also support frame rates up to 120fps in 4K resolution through HDMI 2.1. According to Sony, a software update for both PS5 and supported Bravia TV is required and will be available in January 2022.
If you're curious what Auto HDR Tone Mapping does, it essentially optimises the TV's HDR setting by recognising individual Bravia TV models and select the best HDR setting for the TV accordingly. Sony claims this will allow you to “see crucial details and colours even in high contrast scenes”, like the above Gran Turismo 7 screenshot shows.
Auto Genre Picture Mode on the other hand, detects whether you are playing a game or watching movies and shows. It works somewhat in a similar way to Samsung's Game Mode for their QLED televisions, where the Bravia TV automatically switches into Game Mode when gaming, and minimises input lag to make the action more responsive, or to Standard Mode when watching movies via a streaming service or from a Blu-ray disc on the PS5, which shifts focus to picture processing for a more expressive picture.
