‘Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer – DLS Turbo’ project turns tired Type 964s into carbon-bodied weapons
California-based Porsche 911 restoration and modification specialist Singer has revealed its latest resto-mod for Type 964 Porsche 911s produced between 1989 and 1994.
Officially known as the ‘Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer – DLS Turbo’, the program allows clients to choose from one of two restoration options – Track or Road – inspired by the legendary Porsche 934/5 endurance racers of the late 1970s.
As with every Singer restoration, vehicles are stripped down to their bare monocoques and componentry before being assessed, cleaned, strengthened and progressively pieced back together with a series of performance, cosmetic and interior upgrades designed to personalise, enhance and modernise the now-classic sports cars.
Both versions wear carbon-fibre body panels to endow the 964 with an all-new look – one full of bulges, flares, scoops and intakes – and the stars of the show are the big-mouth front fascia and massively flared rear wheel-arches to match the widened tracks.
Opt for the Track version and the look is accentuated further through the inclusion of a massive and partially adjustable rear wing, extended front splitter and a half roll cage mounted behind the front seats.
The Road version, meanwhile, sports a Carrera RS-style ducktail spoiler, a more angular front fascia and goes without the half cage, however, the key exterior touches are actually interchangeable for those hoping to mix and match.
Both packages roll on staggered (19-inch front, 20-inch rear) forged magnesium centre-lock wheels, wrapped in either Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Cup 2R tyres.
If the semi-slick tyres sound like overkill for a 30-something-year-old sports car, then bear with us because Singer’s latest Porsche 911 specials pump out more than 520kW of power courtesy of myriad high-performance upgrades to their flat-six boxer engines, including a pair of turbochargers with electric wastegates, air-to-water intercooling and a horizontally mounted electric fan.
Power is shipped to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and counteracted by a set of lightweight monobloc brake callipers acting on carbon ceramic discs at all four corners.
Track-oriented suspension including remotely adjustable dampers are optionally available and, realistically, will probably be selected by the bulk of clients given the amount of firepower on tap here.
“The results of turbocharging our advanced four-valve, high-revving DLS engine have been quite spectacular and combining it with all we have learned about lightweighting and vehicle dynamics has provided the perfect canvas to honor the Type 934/5 and its vital role in the genesis of the 911 as a racing car,” Singer Group founder Rob Dickinson said.
“I was 12 when my father’s friend showed us his Super 8 film of the 1977 Watkins Glen 6 Hours.
“As the familiar face of a Porsche 911 morphed into impossibly boxed hips, gaping intakes, and a giant double-planed rear wing, I can still remember the shock and the realisation that this was the other life of the 911 – the racing car.
“Since Singer began, I’ve wanted to return to that moment, collaborate with our clients and celebrate that car – the 934/5.”
Physical examples of the Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer – DLS Turbo and other Singer restorations will be presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month and at California’s Car Week in August.
